This year, one of the highly anticipated games, Borderlands 4, was released on Steam just a few days ago. It currently boasts more than 175,000 simultaneous players. Yet, alongside the positive reception, there have been an increasing number of unfavorable reviews about the game, with the major complaint being that Borderlands 4 struggles to run smoothly on PCs.
Steam user Santa Claus describes Borderlands 4 as the “troublesome trinity of pricing, UE5, and Denuvo.” Despite praising the game’s title for its impressive writing, engaging gunplay, and immersive world, he notes that these positive aspects are overshadowed by frequent issues such as game freezing, crashing, or frame rates plummeting. He compares this to presenting a gourmet meal but only providing plastic cutlery, suggesting that the game’s quality is marred by its technical flaws, making it difficult for players to truly enjoy.
In simpler terms, Rej criticized Borderlands 4 for its poor performance due to subpar optimization and suggested that it’s only suitable for those with high-end computers, similar to what NASA might use. Conversely, Nate provided a positive review but expressed frustration over the game’s lackluster performance even on a powerful GPU like the 4070ti super, struggling to achieve 60 frames per second with upscaling. He described it as a cartoon game and suggested that improvements in optimization through updates could significantly enhance the game’s quality, but lamented that the current state may represent some of the worst optimization ever.
On the PC version, you’ll encounter frequent stuttering and screen tearing even with a powerful setup like an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 7900 XTX GPU and AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8-core CPU. At the lowest settings on 1080p resolution, these problems persist. It’s advisable to wait for these issues to be addressed before making a purchase.
In response to some critical reviews, Gearbox has provided resources for adjusting NVIDIA graphics card settings and a PC troubleshooting guide. It’s important to mention that there are many positive reviews for Borderlands 4 on Steam, but the game currently holds a “mixed” rating overall.
Earlier this week, the computer specifications for Borderlands 4 were reshared, detailing suggested settings and minimum requirements. TopMob’s review of Borderlands 4 on PC rated it a 7 out of 10 and declared it “the most mechanically solid Borderlands game yet.” The game is now available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, but fans looking to play on Switch 2 will have to wait until October 3.
