Borderlands 4 Had The Biggest Launch In Franchise History In The US

Last month’s launch of Borderlands 4 was a huge success, breaking franchise records and becoming one of the best-selling games of 2025 in the US. Data from Circana shows it was the third highest-selling game in the country for the year, thanks to high anticipation leading up to its release.

According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, Borderlands 4 was the best-selling game on Xbox Series X|S and PC in the US for September 2025. It also performed well on PlayStation, landing at number three. While exact sales figures weren’t released, Piscatella reported that Borderlands 4 had the biggest launch month sales of any game in the series, surpassing the previous record (Borderlands 3) by almost 30%.

It’s still unclear whether the game maintained its initial positive reception in October. PC gamers have loudly expressed concerns about how well the game runs. Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford responded to negative reviews by questioning them and even suggesting dissatisfied players request refunds. He also offered advice on improving performance. Gearbox took an unusual approach to address ongoing problems with the PC version, ultimately releasing a new patch for Borderlands 4 to improve stability and performance.

According to Pitchford, the Borderlands series is almost at 100 million copies sold. Just 6 million more sales of Borderlands 4 would push the entire franchise over that milestone.

Gearbox announced that the first downloadable content for Borderlands 4 will be available on November 20th. However, the version of Borderlands 4 planned for the new Switch 2 console has been postponed with no new release date announced.
