Borderlands 4 Devs Aren’t Planning To Nerf Your Favorite Busted Build Yet

Borderlands 4 lets players really customize their characters, and some have found ways to create incredibly powerful, even overpowered, builds. This has led to concerns that Gearbox might quickly nerf these strong builds, particularly those using Vex, a Siren character who can deal massive damage. However, Gearbox says they won’t make changes just because players are finding strong strategies, unless those strategies actually break the game or cause technical problems.

Don’t worry, everyone, we’re not overreacting to this,” said Graame Timmins, creative director for Borderlands 4, on X/Twitter. He was responding to a video showing a player quickly defeating a boss in the game. “However, this appears to be a bug we previously fixed with the characters Harlow and Rafa before the game launched. It could cause damage to repeatedly stack up, potentially crashing the game or freezing the screen. We’re looking into it to see if it’s a real stability issue.”

It’s common in action role-playing games for players to find powerful character combinations that deal more damage than the developers originally planned. We’ve seen this in games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, where a build called ‘Stendhal’ was made weaker after players used it to easily defeat enemies, and Bungie has repeatedly adjusted powerful builds in its games, often frustrating fans. However, Borderlands is different. Players frequently discover strong combinations of weapons, equipment, and abilities that help them win difficult battles, and the developers usually don’t fix these. Instead, they add more challenging game modes to keep things interesting.

Borderlands 4 is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. While many people are playing the game on Steam, it’s also receiving a lot of negative reviews. Players are particularly unhappy with how the game runs on PCs, and there’s been criticism of how Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has responded to their concerns.
