Borderlands 4 received generally positive reviews from critics, but fans are divided. Many players have expressed strong dissatisfaction online, citing performance problems like bugs and low frame rates, and leaving negative reviews on Steam. While Gearbox says they’re working on fixes, CEO Randy Pitchford has publicly defended the game on X, disputing claims that it’s fundamentally flawed.
Randy Pitchford recently shared his thoughts on player expectations regarding game performance, particularly frame rates. He believes some players demand too much, specifically when hoping to run Borderlands 4 at 4K resolution on a variety of computer setups. Pitchford referred to those insisting on 4K as being “stubborn” and suggested they would have a better experience playing at 1440p instead.
Many of you are determined to play with the highest possible settings at 4k, even with older computers. That’s fine, but I’ve found that the demands of the game and Unreal Engine 5 don’t make that worthwhile for me – I’d rather have a smoother experience. I play at 1440p with high settings and think the game still looks fantastic. If you’re willing to compromise a bit on resolution to get better performance and have more fun, I suggest trying 1440p. If you have a really powerful graphics card, 4k should be fine, but if your computer is older or barely meets the requirements, I definitely recommend switching to 1440p.
Randy Pitchford has discussed the issue of players expecting good performance from older computers. He noted that many complaints seem to come from people using PC builds that are several years old. When someone suggested Gearbox should prioritize building Borderlands 4 for more common hardware, Pitchford responded that Borderlands 4 is intended for players with high-end PCs.
Because PCs vary so much, we can’t stop players with older or less powerful hardware from attempting to play the game, unlike on consoles. This leads to a range of reactions – some get frustrated, others experience genuine technical problems we need to address, and some simply need to optimize their PC settings. Finding the right balance between visual quality and performance is key. Trying to run a demanding game on a weak system is like trying to power a monster truck with a leaf blower – it just won’t work.
Besides acknowledging player frustration with the game’s performance, Pitchford offered advice on improving PC performance, like using DLSS and adjusting specific settings. Gearbox also released an official troubleshooting guide on Steam to help players fix any problems or bugs they might encounter.
It seems performance problems are happening randomly, and can change even with small hardware tweaks, making them hard to pinpoint. Reports from PC Gamer and Digital Foundry show slow frame rates even on powerful graphics cards. As expected, testing has revealed significant performance differences depending on the specific computer setup.
