Great news for fans: a third movie in the 28 Years Later series is confirmed, completing the trilogy! If a particular theory about a ‘mind cure’ presented in The Bone Temple proves correct, this new film could be the scariest one yet – but in a surprisingly different way than you might think.
Danny Boyle originally planned for 28 Days Later to be a series of three films. He’s said that Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, would appear near the end of the second film, The Bone Temple, and play a major role in the third.
It was uncertain if ‘Part 3’ would be made, but this week Deadline reported that Sony has approved it, following very positive responses to preview screenings of ‘The Bone Temple’.
It’s not surprising that details about the third movie are scarce, but a popular theory about Samson’s past and Dr. Kelson’s (Ralph Fiennes) cure suggests the series could become much more frightening than fans expect.
Samson theory suggests infected control could lead to chaos in 28 Years Later 3
The theory suggests Kelson’s method allows Samson to remember who he was and control his anger, essentially turning him into a manageable, though not fully healed, Infected person. If this information were revealed, governments might attempt to use the Infected as weapons, potentially causing a worldwide outbreak in 28 Years Later 3.
It’s true that a global outbreak has been done before, like in the movie 28 Weeks Later. However, it doesn’t need to be the main focus. These films have always been equally interested in how people behave when things fall apart, as much as the zombies themselves.
Even a small suggestion that authorities are misusing Kelson’s research could lead to a very dark ending for the story, suggesting the Rage virus isn’t just returning, but is becoming a widespread epidemic.
A theory circulating on Reddit suggests a scene in the trailer shows a young Alpha, Samson, on a train. The idea is that as he passes by, the other passengers stand and transform into zombies.

A Reddit user proposed that Kelson’s treatment might be helping Samson recover his memories. They wondered if, while calmed and possibly with the help of another drug, Samson could finally access those memories.
If someone is calmed down and can access their memories – perhaps through a treatment like psychedelics – it might allow them to act without violence. It’s not a complete fix, but a potential way to manage the problem. I believe this is what we’re seeing in the latest trailer, where the character appears to be fighting others who are also infected.
You know, I’ve been thinking about why the infected always go for people who aren’t infected, and I have a theory. I really think it’s our fear! I bet they can see when we’re scared, and that’s what triggers them to attack. It just makes sense to me.
The Reddit user suggested that being tranquilized might help Samson, and others with the infection, understand that feeling scared isn’t the same as being in actual danger.

They pointed out that Dr. Kelsen’s practices heavily emphasize facial expressions, suggesting that might be the core of his approach.
I’m certain this is just my idea, but maybe Samson remembering being on a train when the outbreak first started gave him the insight to understand that people who aren’t showing angry faces aren’t necessarily a threat.
The theory has generated a lot of debate, but one comment particularly resonated: the idea that if a treatment is found to control the infected, governments might weaponize them, potentially causing a global pandemic.

Okay, so I was just thinking… could what I saw potentially be a hint at ’28 Years Later 3′? It’s total guesswork right now, but honestly, half the joy of being a horror fan is coming up with theories and trying to figure things out!
Many people agree with the idea, and one commenter wrote, “YES! That shot of Samson looking completely traumatized in the trailer makes me think you’re right.”
Man, I’m really excited about this idea – it feels like it could fit perfectly into the overall story of The Years, and even into 28 Days Later as a whole. Someone else suggested it might be a scene with Samson and a bunch of other infected on a train, which sounds awesome!
The new horror film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be released in theaters on January 16, 2026. While you wait, you can read our explanation of the movie’s ending and discover some of the best horror films released in 2025.
