Even after fourteen years and sixteen seasons, there’s always something fresh to discover about the Belcher family and their burger joint, Bob’s Burgers. To celebrate, Bob’s Burgers revisits the early days of the restaurant, while current-day Bob tries to implement a significant update. Fans will finally see how the restaurant got its start – including the reason for all those grand openings (which is a recurring joke in the show’s opening credits) – and learn the story of Tina Belcher’s birth.
Bob’s Burgers has gradually revealed details about how the restaurant started throughout the show, but it never fully explained the story. The Season 5 episode, “Father of the Bob,” showed that Bob got his love of cooking from his dad, but they clashed over burger ideas. This led Bob to open his own place instead of working with his father. Bob’s dedication is what’s kept the restaurant going all these years, though we haven’t learned much about how Linda helped build it, other than knowing she was a key part of its success. Without Linda’s warm and welcoming personality, the Bob’s Burgers restaurant wouldn’t be the same. Building on the quick flashbacks in The Bob’s Burgers Movie, the Season 16 premiere offers a heartfelt look into the beloved animated family and how they created their close-knit community.
How Did the Actual Bob’s Burgers Restaurant Come to Be?
In an unusual glimpse into the past, we see Bob and Linda before they owned the restaurant. Like many young couples just starting out, they lived in a tiny apartment and felt let down by the monotony of typical American jobs. Bob, who still had a full head of hair at the time, was close to abandoning his ambitions while working as a line cook, endlessly preparing surf and turf. Linda was equally unhappy as an insurance company receptionist, feeling that her friendly demeanor wasn’t appreciated. It was a difficult time for both of them.
While trying to cheer herself up with a trip to Wonder Wharf, Linda noticed an empty storefront – inspired by creator Loren Bouchard’s actual San Francisco apartment – and suggested they use money from her condo to put a down payment on it. Bob turned down her offer, worried about potentially wasting her money and facing her parents’ disapproval. However, Linda pointed out that this restaurant wasn’t just Bob’s dream; she also wanted to build something meaningful with her life and her husband, and bring joy to others.
Although Linda was essential to the restaurant’s creation – as Bob highlighted, it was originally her vision. The restaurant stemmed from their shared passion for bringing people together, delicious food, and a cozy atmosphere. However, the restaurant’s opening day also brought another special arrival: their daughter, Tina. This boy-crazy teen gave Bob the motivation he needed to persevere and keep the restaurant going. The grand opening wasn’t a huge success, but Bob and Linda realized they gained far more that day, including the joy of welcoming their first child.
Teddy was instrumental in building the restaurant from the very beginning (even while dealing with a difficult divorce). Mort and Edith were among the first to dine there, and Bob’s innovative cooking motivated Speedo Guy to abandon his suit and leave his job as a lawyer to embrace a life of carefree rollerblading-in his underwear! Bob and Linda achieved their goal: to spread happiness to others and themselves, one burger at a time.
The Restaurant’s Origin Story Celebrates the Heart of Bob’s Burgers
The start of Season 16 isn’t entirely a look back at the past. The episode actually opens with the Belcher family dealing with things right now, as Bob is reluctant to increase his burger prices by $1. Linda argues that raising prices is necessary to keep the restaurant afloat and cover expenses, but Bob thinks it’s too much of a jump.
While all this is happening, the kids decide to make a musical album, and it’s all about growing up in the restaurant. Honestly, it really gets under Bob’s skin! Seeing him struggle with what to do now makes me realize how awful opening the restaurant was for him – the flashbacks really show it. Plus, the kids aren’t exactly thrilled with how the album is turning out, which just adds to everything. It’s like, they don’t think it’s very good, and it’s really reflecting his own nauseating experience and their doubts.
It’s remarkable to see a story about pursuing your dreams and embracing change in a show that’s reached 300 episodes. Even after all this time, Bob’s Burgers retains the same endearing quality that made it so popular initially. However, the series now boasts a much larger collection of episodes that are genuinely touching. From “The Amazing Rudy” to “They Slug Horses, Don’t They?,” the show has evolved from wild, unpredictable humor to more heartfelt, character-focused stories. It’s still incredibly funny, but now it also offers a sense of hope, leaving a lasting positive impression on viewers long after the credits roll.
The show remains successful because it’s fundamentally about a family with a strong, loving bond, and it avoids relying on negativity or prejudice for humor. The characters stumble, make errors, and sometimes struggle, but they consistently support each other and overcome challenges. Fans wouldn’t want Bob’s Burgers any other way, so let’s hope for 300 more episodes with the Belchers.
New episodes of Bob’s Burgers air every Sunday at 9:30 PM ET on Fox.
