News broke late last summer that several familiar faces wouldn’t be returning for the fall 2025 season of Saturday Night Live. Season 51 of SNL saw five cast members depart, including Ego Nwodim and Heidi Gardner. While the changes surprised many, including former cast member Punkie Johnson, Bobby Moynihan says cast turnover is common. I especially appreciate his advice for those who are continuing with the show.

What Advice Does Former SNL Star Bobby Moynihan Have For Current Cast Members?
As a huge SNL fan, I’ll always remember Bobby Moynihan! He was on the show from 2008 to 2017 and totally killed it with impressions – his Guy Fieri, Danny DeVito, and Susan Boyle were spot-on. Plus, who could forget his work as one of the Dancing Skeletons in those hilarious David S. Pumpkins sketches with Tom Hanks? He even helped write those! He was recently chatting with Entertainment Weekly about all the changes happening on the show – they actually added five new cast members – and he had some things to say…
It’s confusing, but this is typical for the show. That’s just what it’s about – people entering and leaving, enjoying life, and having fun.
It’s true that there’s been a recent flurry of cast and crew changes, including some writers. However, longtime viewers know that turnover is pretty common on the show. More importantly, Saturday Night Live has a history of being a launching pad for comedic talent, helping stars like Eddie Murphy, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Tina Fey achieve success.
Following recent cast changes on Saturday Night Live, Sherri Shepherd has publicly urged the show to hire a Black woman, and many people support her call.
As a big fan, I always appreciate when actors talk about what it’s really like behind the scenes. This NCIS: Origins guy gets it – he was on the show long enough to know how exhausting it is to do a live show week after week. He wished everyone who’s moved on all the best, but had some really funny and relatable advice for the current cast, which I thought was great!
I’m sending all my best wishes to everyone involved, and especially hoping those going through it right now are taking care of themselves – getting good therapy and enough rest. It’s so important!
That’s generally good advice, but it especially rings true for people who work at Saturday Night Live. Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and even Conan O’Brien, who used to write for the show, have all mentioned how working there increased their anxiety. Rachel Dratch pointed out that worrying about how you’ll do will likely make your performance worse.
It’s important for everyone working on the show to take care of their well-being, both physically and emotionally, and it’s fitting that someone with experience like Moynihan would suggest that.
