Blumhouse Teases Major Saw Reboot With Original Talent ‘Hugely Involved’

The horror franchise is getting a fresh start. After Blumhouse recently took over the series, Jason Blum announced the next movie will be a complete reimagining, bringing back the creators who originally made it so scary.

In a recent interview, producer Oren Blum discussed his plans for the future of the *Saw* franchise. He wants to return to the core elements that made the original films so successful. “Making ten movies in any franchise is a challenge,” Blum acknowledged, praising the previous producers for building the series and allowing him to continue it. His main goal is to involve the original creative team more closely, particularly director James Wan, to revitalize the franchise and recapture its initial spark.

It makes sense that James Wan is involved in the new *Saw* movie. His production company recently gained control of the *Saw* franchise from the original producers, Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Lionsgate, which has always co-owned and distributed the films, will remain a partner with 50% ownership.

Although a new movie isn’t being made right now, this is a major shift for the incredibly popular *Saw* horror franchise, which has earned over $1 billion. The original *Saw*, released in 2004 by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, became a huge success in the horror genre. It tells the story of two men who wake up chained in a dirty, rundown bathroom with no idea how they got there. They quickly realize they’ve become the latest targets of the notorious Jigsaw Killer.

In a terrifying situation, Dr. Gordon receives instructions – delivered on tape – that force him to kill Adam in order to protect his family. As they investigate, they discover the awful truth about where they are and what’s happening. The tools provided aren’t meant to help them escape, but to inflict harm. What follows is a deeply disturbing journey into moral horror, where surviving means making an unthinkable sacrifice.

Saw’s Success Spawned A Massive Franchise

The original *Saw* film debuted with $18.6 million and eventually earned $104 million worldwide, kicking off a hugely popular franchise that became a Halloween staple for almost ten years. Despite the strong performance of *Saw X* in 2023 ($112 million globally), plans for *Saw XI* hit a roadblock. Reports suggest Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures disagreed on the film’s creative vision. Although a script was already written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, and Kevin Greutert was set to direct again, the project was ultimately cancelled.

Now that Blumhouse is in charge of the *Saw* franchise, it looks like the series is getting a fresh start that will both respect its roots and feel modern. Leigh Whannell, who wrote and acted in the first three *Saw* films, is also likely to be involved. Considering Blumhouse’s success with other horror franchises, fans can anticipate a return to the psychological thrills that made the original movies so effective.

Saw is streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ (in select regions) from Oct. 1.
