The long-awaited release is finally here! Recent reports show that the four-year wait hasn’t lessened fans’ excitement for this supernatural horror – in fact, it seems to have made them even more eager.
The sequel to 2021’s *The Black Phone* had a great opening weekend, despite it being a generally slow time for movie releases. *The Black Phone 2* was a success for Blumhouse Productions, launching the spooky season with $26.5 million in North American ticket sales. The film has already earned back its $30 million production cost, and with $15.5 million earned internationally, its worldwide total currently stands at $42 million.
As a movie fan, I was surprised to learn the sequel cost almost double what the original did – the first film came in around $18 million, but this one ballooned to over $75 million just to recoup the investment! Still, with a $42 million opening weekend, it looks like Universal and Blumhouse have a good reason to be optimistic. That’s a really strong start, and hopefully it continues!
The horror genre, known for its low-cost productions, has faced challenges this year, but *Black Phone 2* might be the success it needed. Blumhouse, a major player in this space, saw disappointing results with films like *Wolf Man*, which only earned $35.2 million worldwide despite a $25 million budget, and *M3GAN 2.0*, which cost between $15 and $25 million to make. However, *Black Phone 2* quickly outperformed both of those films in just one weekend.
This film might be the successful comeback Blumhouse fans were hoping for, and things look promising with another sequel, *Five Nights at Freddy’s 2*, already planned for 2025. The sequel has a larger budget of $51 million, meaning it needs to earn around $130 million worldwide to become profitable. The original *Five Nights at Freddy’s* film, released in 2023, was a huge success, earning nearly $297.1 million globally.
Stephen King offered a concise review of the sequel, initially stating it wasn’t as strong as the original, but then immediately adding that it actually *was* better. It received a B grade from CinemaScore and was generally well-received, earning a 74% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics and an 85% audience score. This is slightly lower than the 2021 film, which received a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 81% from critics and 88% from audiences.
Tron: Ares Crashed and Burned at the Box Office
While *Black Phone 2* started off with a respectable first week, other movies didn’t fare as well. The film’s second weekend was disappointing, dropping to second place with $11 million in earnings. After two weeks, it has made $54.6 million in the US and $103 million globally, significantly less than its $180 million production cost.
Aziz Ansari’s first time directing a movie, *Good Fortune*, starring Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen, didn’t have a strong opening weekend, earning only $6.2 million despite costing $30 million to make. The film is a comedy with a supernatural twist, where characters switch bodies. Hopefully, positive reactions from audiences will lead to increased ticket sales in the coming days.
Black Phone 2 is playing in theaters.
