Blue And Trigger Got Some Great News On NCIS: Sydney’s Latest Episode, But That Ending Twist Has Me Concerned

Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS: Sydney episode “Black is White” are ahead!

Bluebird Gleeson and Travis “Trigger” Riggs have both faced uncertainty in Season 3 of NCIS: Sydney. After the events of “True Blue,” Bluebird had to formally apply for her job as a forensic scientist to officially rejoin the team. Travis, a former bomb disposal expert, has been assisting when needed since the season began, but feels like a temporary addition who could be let go at any time.

Blue and Trigger both received positive career updates in the latest episode of NCIS: Sydney, which aired as part of the 2025 TV season. But this good news was quickly overshadowed by a new mystery, and I’m particularly worried about what it means for Jim “JD” Dempsey.

Blue And Trigger Finally Have Job Security

The episode “Black and White” began with doubts about Blue rejoining the team, as she lacked the formal qualifications to work as a forensic scientist – despite being clearly skilled. Her background includes degrees in computer science and a PhD in IT and forensic science, but not a traditional science bachelor’s degree. Meanwhile, Michelle Mackey wanted to remove Trigger from the team, telling JD he was useless, lacked initiative, and didn’t follow orders. It was a harsh assessment!

The episode had a happy ending for both Blue and Trigger. JD managed to save Blue’s position by working with the Australian Federal Police to grant her an extension based on her accumulated hours. Meanwhile, Mackey decided to give Trigger a proper opportunity and set him up with his own workshop at headquarters, a much better place to utilize his diverse skills and prove his worth. The question now is whether Trigger will remain with the team long-term, or if future events in NCIS: Sydney Season 3 will lead him to leave. Only time will tell.

JD Seems To Be Up To Something Shady

There are some questionable circumstances surrounding Blue and Trigger remaining on the team. The last episode showed JD meeting with a coworker, Rory, at a bar. JD admitted he used his influence to keep Trigger at NCIS – Rory had originally asked him to give Trigger a chance, describing him as a reliable person. JD then asked Rory to secretly pass along Blue’s application to his contacts at Admissions.

More NCIS: Sydney Coverage

Olivia Swann, star of NCIS: Sydney, has expressed interest in a crossover episode with the original NCIS series, and fans are excited by the idea.

Fans of NCIS: Sydney are hoping Mackey and JD will become a couple, as Olivia Swann acknowledges the chemistry between their characters who also happen to be colleagues.

This meeting took place after JD shared some good news with Blue, and it turns out the “special permission” he’d mentioned isn’t real. Instead, JD is having Rory work around the rules to let Blue keep doing her forensic science work. It seems like the help JD gave Rory for Trigger was also done using questionable methods. I wonder if there’s more to this than meets the eye?

That unsettling music at the end of the episode suggests Blue’s application on NCIS: Sydney isn’t finished with yet. Even if JD manages to cover it up, someone could still find out the application wasn’t processed correctly and use that as leverage against Blue. And that’s on top of the existing mysteries from “Lost in Translation” that already had us hooked!
