Blood, Cults and Killer Gators: Black Mandala Unveils Genre Slate at EFM (EXCLUSIVE)

The New Zealand company, Black Mandala, specializing in sales, is showcasing a mysterious collection of six films spanning various genres at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin. These titles encompass everything from eerie occult horror to intriguing creature features.

1978, a gripping story, leads the charge, revolving around torturers who encounter an unexpected twist when their victims prove to be members of a mysterious dark cult. This period thriller is set amidst the World Cup soccer final and will transform a hidden prison into an unsettling depiction of hell on earth.

The company’s lineup of terrifying films features “Play Dead,” in which Paula Brasca finds herself trapped in a chilling scenario, forced to remain still among the dead while eerie rituals transpire overhead. In another genre, the psychological thriller “Traumnovelle” (Dream Novel) – an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella that once inspired Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut” – follows a wealthy couple as they navigate a perilous journey into the secretive, decadent underground society where their forbidden desires could prove fatal.

In the supernatural horror “Containment,” a nun encounters something more terrifying than demons as she strives to rescue a girl’s spirit. For enthusiasts of slasher movies, “Fear Cabin” delivers traditional genre chills when a peaceful weekend retreat for six friends suddenly transforms into a life-or-death struggle against an unseen threat.

Completing the lineup is “Lake Jesup,” a setting where redemption clashes with frightening reptile dread as an ex-convict confronts a colossal, fugitive alligator known as Bonecrusher amidst the perilous waters of Florida.

As a film enthusiast myself, I can’t help but express my anticipation for Berlin’s EFM – it’s one of the most significant market events in our annual calendar. For us at Black Mandala, as both sales agents and producers, this platform offers an incredible opportunity to establish fresh collaborations, seal robust deals, and find the ideal destinations for our films. This year, we’re particularly thrilled to exclusively showcase a stellar selection of top-tier movies, underscoring our dedication to sharing daring and groundbreaking genre cinema with audiences worldwide.

The European Film Market runs alongside the Berlin Film Festival.
