Blizzard takes it seriously and plans to completely overhaul Diablo 4. Important changes are coming that prepare the ARPG for the second expansion

Blizzard has revealed upcoming changes for Diablo IV, first available for testing and then rolling out to all players with the new season. A recent announcement hinted at a significant test server, and now it’s clear why – these updates impact core aspects of the game.

  1. PTR 2.5.0 will be available from October 21, 10:30 am PT, to October 28, 11:00 am PT.

Diablo IV – What’s New in PTR 2.5.0?

Changed enemies

The developers are planning a small increase in difficulty by updating the monsters. They’ll be faster and more adaptable in combat, making them harder to predict and more challenging to fight.

Enemies will be tougher, and they’ll spread out more, making it harder to defeat them quickly as a group. We’ve also improved elite enemies with 20 new variations, and now their allies will share some of their strengths.

Changes in items

We’ve made a big improvement to how Tempering and Masterworking work. You’ll no longer have to rely on luck when adding bonuses to your gear – now, Tempering lets you directly select the specific bonus you want.

Instead of directly increasing stats, masterworking will now enhance an item’s overall quality, giving it a bonus to damage, armor, or resistance. Items can be improved up to quality level 20. Once an item reaches maximum quality, you’ll have the chance to upgrade one of its random properties to a more powerful version.

And there’s more! Blizzard is introducing a new system called Sanctification that lets players enhance their gear. By visiting the Heavenly Forge, you’ll be able to imbue items with angelic power, adding unique benefits like new stats, replacing existing ones, eliminating repair costs, or even granting a second legendary power.

Changes in defense and healing

We’ve updated the character defense system, meaning players will now need to actively focus on survival. Previously, players could reach a maximum level for armor and resistance and then ignore those stats. Now, those caps are removed, and increasing those stats will yield diminishing returns. Also, armor will now reduce all incoming damage, while physical resistance will handle what armor used to cover.

We’ve added a major new feature: Toughness. This trait represents how much damage of each type a character can withstand after considering all damage reduction methods.

We’ve simplified the potions – there are now only four types. When you use one, it will instantly restore 35% of your health. Plus, potions now recharge automatically, becoming available again every 30 seconds.

New mechanics in this Season

The upcoming season will center around smaller threats that assaulted the Sanctuary. Each of these threats will be linked to a unique way to play the game:

  1. Duriel with Helltides;
  2. Belial with The Pits;
  3. Andariel with the Kurast Undercity;
  4. Azmodan as the new World Boss.

To help you succeed, we’re introducing new seasonal powers called Divine Favors. Each Favor has three parts: a reward, a beneficial gift, and a harmful gift. You’ll receive the reward every time you place a gift, but whether it’s a good or bad outcome depends on where you put it.

Choosing the second option could lead to problems, like making enemies stronger or having worms eat your potions.

Rest of new features

A new type of challenge called the Tower is coming to the game. These are challenging, multi-level dungeons that need to be completed within a certain time, and they’re designed for our most skilled players. Blizzard wants players to know these Towers are currently in testing, and they plan to make improvements based on feedback.

The Towers connect to leaderboards, showcasing the fastest completion times. This ranking system will continue to improve, and the current Public Test Realm is being used to ensure everything functions smoothly.

The game will also feature a Season Rank that players can improve by finishing special dungeons that appear regularly. As you increase your rank, you’ll earn extra rewards like skill points.

Players are… satisfied

The community has reacted very well to the newly announced features, even surprising some Diablo IV fans. While a few people have concerns about certain changes, most are excited about the overall improvements.

It’s really great how connected the Diablo 4 developers are with their players. Season 11 is shaping up to be fantastic – it’s tough to imagine anyone finding fault with it, though I’m sure some people will try! Each season consistently improves the game, in my opinion.

Honestly, I’m totally on board with the updates to Tempering and Masterworking! I’ve never been a fan of how random those systems felt, so getting rid of that luck-based element is a huge win for me.

Hmm kind of funny. Rod Ferguson leaves… game gets better…

While many are excited, some are wisely cautious, pointing out that the new features still need thorough testing. We’ll only know if Blizzard made the right choices after we’ve had a chance to try them out. That said, this latest PTR (2.5.0) appears to be a particularly significant update.
