It’s not hidden knowledge that both Black Ops 6 and Warzone have been experiencing a drop in the number of active players. However, the situation appears to be more serious than first assumed.
In a striking turn of events, BO6 broke all Call of Duty records, outperforming every past installment in terms of player numbers, hours played, and matches within the initial month following release. Yet, during December, Warzone witnessed a decline of approximately 102,000 players, which equates to about 32.6% of its Steam-based player base.
Initially, the game BO6 saw a high of 315,000 simultaneous players on Steam at its launch. However, by late December, it had dropped to more than 100,000. Content creators such as Nadeshot attributed this significant drop in popularity to issues with cheating and performance. Additionally, former Call of Duty professional Scump and others have expressed concerns about the franchise’s future since the problems don’t seem to be getting better.
As a long-time Call of Duty (CoD) player, I can tell you that looking at the player count numbers alone doesn’t paint the whole picture. From my perspective, based on my years of playing this game, there is definitely more to these statistics than meets the eye.
I’ve seen the ups and downs of CoD’s popularity over the years, and I can attest that the player count numbers don’t always reflect the overall health and success of the game. For example, when a new Call of Duty title is released, the player base skyrockets due to hype and excitement, but then gradually declines as players move on to other games or become disillusioned with the gameplay. However, the dedicated fanbase remains strong and continues to play regularly.
Additionally, it’s important to consider that not all players are created equal. Some may only play a few rounds or matches here and there, while others play for hours on end every day. These casual players may not show up in the player count numbers, but they still contribute to the game’s overall economy and community.
In conclusion, while player count numbers can give us a rough idea of a game’s popularity, it’s crucial to look beyond these figures to truly understand the state of CoD and its players. The game has faced challenges in recent years, but the dedicated fanbase remains strong and continues to support the franchise.
BO6 players unconvinced by misleading player count number
According to CharlieIntel’s report, “Call of Duty” was the most frequently played game on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the United States up until December 21.
During the week concluding December 21st, Call of Duty held the top spot among the most-played games on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the United States, coinciding with its Black Ops 6 free trial. Meanwhile, it ranked as the 6th most played game on Steam during the same period.

During that timeframe, Call of Duty (CoD) was one of the top six games played on Steam. However, Call of Duty content creator JGOD questioned how this could be the case, as the number of players on Steam had significantly dropped.
HunterTV, another YouTube creator, pointed out the strategic decision behind Call of Duty Headquarters (COD HQ) by saying, “It’s cleverly designed because when players are engaged in Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, or Warzone, it considers them all as part of the same platform.
Although Call of Duty was the most popular game based on data compiled from four separate titles, it’s important to note that games like Fortnite and Marvel Rivals are close runners-up, as they only have data from a single title each.
A third player suggested that Warzone won’t get better, reasoning that the large number of players makes the developers less motivated to implement major updates since both games seem to be performing satisfactorily as is.
Gladly, I’ve learned that Raven Software is planning significant updates for Warzone in the coming year, potentially bringing the much-needed refreshment this battle royale genre enthusiast has been longing for, to rekindle trust among us disillusioned players.
