Black Doves recap and ending explained: Who died?

As a seasoned viewer who has seen their fair share of political dramas, I must say that Black Doves has certainly captured my attention. From the intricate plot twists to the complex characters, this series seems to have it all.

It turns out that a significant amount of socio-political narrative can be conveyed in only six installments. The series “Black Doves” has left many viewers puzzled, hence we’re here to dissect its finale and speculate about the prospects for Season 2.

Once again, Netflix is leaving us in awe! After series like “Bodies,” “Fool Me Once,” and “3 Body Problem,” they’re adding another exciting title to their 2024 lineup – a gripping spy thriller titled “Black Doves.” This tale unfolds in the familiar setting of Great Britain, with Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, and Sarah Lancashire taking on roles within a clandestine organization that finds itself entangled in government secrets.

Similar to when it’s scheduled to air, this upcoming TV series takes place at Christmastime, making it essentially a dark sequel to the romantic comedy Love Actually. Unlike the scenes with holiday messages on doors, there are numerous instances where characters meet an untimely demise by gunfire instead.

Without delving into specifics, let me give you a quick rundown of where the Black Doves story stands before we dive into Season 2. Be aware that there are potential spoilers coming up! Here’s a condensed recap to help refresh your memory.

Episode 1-5 roundup

At the heart of Black Doves lies our main narrative: A Chinese ambassador was murdered, causing suspicion towards the US as the culprit. However, the CIA denies any involvement, leaving the Prime Minister and his cabinet frustrated and puzzled. Helen and Sam unwittingly become embroiled in this intricate predicament.

In the narrative, Helen (Keira Knightley) is a member of the Black Dove, a clandestine group of spies that trade confidential details to the most affluent purchasers. Her association with this enigmatic organization dates back 10 years before the events depicted in our story, as disclosed through flashbacks. It was during this time that she encountered Sam (Ben Whishaw), who served as an unconventional assassin for Mrs. Reed (Sarah Lancashire) at the moment.

2014

The narrative unfolds sequentially, revealing that Daisy, later known as Helen, joined the team in 2014. She was paired with Sam to track down a political figure named Wallace (Andrew Buchan). Over the course of their partnership, Reed taught her combat skills and they developed a friendship.

In their past, Helen played a significant role in saving Sam’s boyfriend, Michael (Omari Douglas), from a botched hit. It’s revealed that Sam was engaged in two lines of work: one for a woman called Lenny Lines (Kathryn Hunter) and another for Reed. His assignments for Lenny started with a difficult task – killing the man who had wronged her, which happened to be his own father. He executed these tasks successfully until he was asked to eliminate four individuals simultaneously. The first three were manageable, but the fourth turned out to be a child. Unable to carry out the order, Sam misled Lenny, telling her that the task was completed when it wasn’t.

It’s not unexpected that Sam was found guilty for the crimes committed at his residence, placing Michael in potential harm’s way. Since he had informed his partner that he worked in insurance, being targeted in a shooting attack came as an unpleasant surprise. Sam successfully escorted him to safety after making a call for assistance from Helen. With Reed’s aid, she secured the area and transported Michael to a safe location, while Sam escaped abroad.

In the meantime, Helen has embarked on a separate path. She’s now involved with Wallace, a rising political figure, and expecting their first child together. Yet, she doesn’t harbor feelings of love for him, which leads her to consider leaving the Black Doves organization altogether. She confides in Reed, who offers to find a replacement for her. To persuade Reed to assist Sam after the attack, she pledges to continue serving as an asset within the group.

2024

When we first encounter Helen, she’s in a difficult situation. She has been secretly involved with Andrew Koji, whom we later learn was Jason, while Wallace was unaware. Tragically, Jason and two other individuals – one being tabloid journalist Philip and the other Maggie from a jewelry store – are killed at the beginning of Episode 1. Throughout the episode, it’s revealed that they all shared some connection to Kai-Ming, the daughter of the Chinese ambassador.

Apart from being allegedly murdered in an attack by the Americans, Kai-Ming has also mysteriously vanished. Helen decides to investigate the circumstances, prompting Reed to contact Sam in Rome and ask him to return, as he hasn’t been seen since leaving eight years ago, without any explanation for his friends or Michael.

Initially, Helen locates the murderer responsible for Jason’s death, who remains tight-lipped about his employer. Later, she heads to Jason’s residence in search of evidence connecting him to additional homicides. However, two assassins show up at the scene with the intent to eliminate her. Fortunately, Sam steps in and dispatches one of them, while Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) makes a hasty escape through a window.

Meanwhile, Lenny continually scolds Sam for an unfinished task from long ago, which involved hot coals. This young man, now grown into Hector Newman, played by Luther Ford, holds a significant position in the criminal underworld. When Sam hears that Michael could be targeted by Williams and his new partner Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy), he vows to take care of Hector instead.

The two paths initially cross at Hector’s secret lair in Peckham, where he captures Kai-Ming. However, by the time Sam arrives, both Hector and Kai-Ming have already fled. As a result, Sam is forced to seek aid from Eleanor and Williams to catch his team, but more troubles loom ahead when they do.

Fundamentally, the Ambassador incident, which includes our storyline featuring Hector and Kai-Ming, seems to be part of a far larger scheme than originally believed. As the Chinese persist in blaming the Americans for the attack, there is reportedly video evidence contradicting this claim. Cole Atwood, a CIA agent, can be seen departing from the scene on the night of the incident, but he explains it to Helen and Sam that this ties back to a notorious crime group known as The Clarks.

It appears that only Reed seems to be aware of them, yet she’s quite angry with Helen. To Reed, by not giving Cole to her, Helen is a risk – and it turns out she has viewed her as such for years. Ever since her incident in 2014, Reed has been discreetly preparing another agent to take over her role, who now works under Wallace as his assistant. She confides in Wallace about Helen’s affair, but he remains unconvinced.

Concurrently, Reed assigns Sam the mission to eliminate Alex Clark. However, this operation is to be carried out independently by him. Equipped solely with an address, Sam encounters Reed’s thugs upon arrival at the location, remaining oblivious to the real persona hidden behind Alex Clark’s name.

The big bads were revealed in the Black Doves ending

In the finale of Black Doves, it’s revealed that both Helen and Sam saved their comrades. They discover the true identities of The Clarks, with a brief appearance by Tracey Ullman as matriarch Alex Clark. However, things take an unexpected turn when Sam slays Alex and Trent before Helen can seek her revenge, making him a more wanted man. Consequently, footage showing the death of the ambassador falls into the wrong hands – namely, the CIA.

When Helen learns that Reed has dispatched Sam to assassinate Alex Clark alone, she becomes furious. She asks Reed for the location, but Reed refuses. Since there’s no proof, Helen decides to embark on her own investigation. A memory of a bracelet Jason once gifted her comes to mind, which leads her to the jewelry store where Maggie used to work. In the safe, she discovers a pinhole camera containing video recordings.

It turned out that Trent Clark, Alex Clark’s son and Kai-Ming’s boyfriend, was the one who murdered the ambassador, not Cole as initially suspected. Video evidence depicts him shoving the ambassador onto a sofa, causing his head to strike a table. In distress, he phoned his mother, who dispatched Stephen Yarrick (a colleague of Wallace who had earlier been killed) to handle the situation. This revelation also implies that the Prime Minister was aware of the truth all along.

Helen uses the footage as leverage against Trent, who she tracks down by tracing the logo on his cap, to get hold of Alex. She agrees to meet, leading Helen and Williams directly to Sam, Eleanor, and Kai-Ming. Trent reveals he killed the ambassador to Kai-Ming, while it’s also revealed that it was Trent who called the assassins to kill Maggie, Jason, and Phillip rather than Alex. While Alex is dismayed at having to clear up so much of her son’s mess, Helen threatens to kill the pair after sneaking a gun into Trent’s pocket.

In the aftermath of Lenny’s intense fury, it was actually Sam who ended up taking their lives. By then, representatives from China and the US had already arrived seeking the tape. When the group managed to elude them, Helen successfully handed it over to Cole. This action brought satisfaction to Reed, as both of her tasks were now accomplished. However, a foreboding voice summoned Helen to warn her that Sam would face retribution for his actions.

In their last encounter, Reed discloses everything they discovered about Jason. It turns out that when Helen’s name was flagged by a covert MI5 division, Jason was assigned to investigate whether she was indeed a spy. Unbeknownst to Helen, Jason was MI5 all along! However, Reed reveals that despite Helen confessing her true identity to him, Jason went on record stating no evidence linked her to espionage. Even though it put his own life at risk, he did this because he genuinely cared for Helen. Reed implies that perhaps, just maybe, Jason truly loved her too.

Concerning Sam, he reconciled with Michael throughout the series and they’ve resumed cohabiting. Now, Michael is privy to all of Sam’s real-life secrets, and one evening, he notices Hector hanging around on their couch, waiting for Sam. Hector admits that he’s always been unsure if Sam was his guardian angel or bitter foe, but he presents an employment opportunity. If Sam stays in the UK, it involves collaborating with him at work.

Sam goes to see Lenny, sharing news of Hector’s proposal. Having decided to move past their history, he departs Lenny unhurt, bound for Helen’s for Christmas. They are securely settled back into family routines without arousing any doubts, and the question of whether they’ll meet again in the future comes up between them.

Who’s been killed off?

Fortunately, none from the principal cast of Black Doves has met their end yet. Regrettably, that’s not the case for Kent, Trent Clark, Alex Clark, our emissary, along with countless assassins and innocent bystanders who have perished.

It seems highly likely that all the characters who made it through the first season will be back for the next one, since this was decided upon before the first season even premiered. It’s nearly certain that Helen, Sam, Reed, Williams, and Eleanor will return.

As a gamer, it’s clear that the supporting characters’ roles are yet to be fully revealed. Kai-Ming’s storyline has essentially come to an end, but she’s formed quite the bond with Williams and Eleanor now. I’ve got a feeling Lenny Lines hasn’t seen the last of Sam just yet – she’s still very much hung up on Hector being alive.

It’s quite possible that both Helen and Sam might decide to end their current relationships, which would also mean that Wallace and Michael would no longer be factors in the situation. However, it seems less probable for Wallace due to his frequent visits to No. 10.

Season 2 plot theories

It’s highly probable that Helen and Sam will experience severe repercussions due to their actions against the Clark family. Meanwhile, Sam has taken on a new role working with Hector. Reed is orchestrating Helen’s path towards Downing Street, placing Wallace in line to become the next Prime Minister.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel that the mysterious events surrounding the Clark family’s murder will be the central thread weaving through Season 2. The identity of the person speaking to Helen in Episode 6 remains elusive, suggesting that the Black Doves have only just scratched the surface of this intricate mystery.

Since Sam has chosen to collaborate with Hector in order to maintain his residency in the UK, it seems like a storyline that’s bound to unfold. It remains uncertain if they will get along, but there appears to be an undercurrent of respect between them. The outcome of their endeavors may depend on whether Sam and Michael can sustain their partnership as well.

From my perspective as a passionate viewer, it seems there’s more to Reed than meets the eye. After six episodes, I find myself knowing very little about her character, and the reason behind her betrayal of Helen against the Chinese remains unclear. Here’s hoping that Season 2 delves deeper into this mystery.

It’s doubtful that Helen will remain fully loyal to Wallace, be it politically or otherwise, given her penchant for sharing confidential information with the highest-bidding parties within No. 10. But post the ambassador’s demise, is Wallace’s integrity sufficient to steer the nation?

Incidentally, wouldn’t it add an exciting twist if Kai-Ming also became an apprentice assassin? Given her strong connection with Williams and Eleanor, and the anger she harbors over her father and boyfriend’s demise, such a turn of events could prove intriguing.
