BioWare Reportedly Has Fewer Than 100 Staff Members Left

Following EA’s disclosure that Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn’t meet their targets, employees at BioWare shared they were either let go or reassigned to different departments within the company. A recent update suggests that this round of layoffs has reduced BioWare’s staff count significantly, leaving them with less than 100 employees on board now.

According to Gary McKay, General Manager at BioWare, they are taking time to rethink and transform the studio into a leaner, specialized one that excels in creating exceptional role-playing games. As reported by Bloomberg, the current workforce is under 100 people, a significant decrease from over 200 during the development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. At its zenith, BioWare boasted three studios with an estimated staff of around 400 employees.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, EA was considering lending BioWare developers to other studios while they were preparing the next Mass Effect game after Veilguard’s launch. However, this game failed to meet its intended level of player interaction by 50%. Regarding EA Sports FC 25, the company did not disclose exact performance figures, but stated that it didn’t perform as well as expected following two years of growth for the franchise.

The disillusionment experienced by Veilguard concludes a ten-year period where BioWare has struggled to meet expectations. Their live-service game, Anthem, was met with unfavorable reviews and eventually ceased operation, while Mass Effect: Andromeda failed to match the caliber or sales of the original series. Remarkably, the remastered trilogy fared significantly better in comparison.

In summary, both Dragon Age: The Veilguard and EA Sports FC 25 have garnered mostly positive feedback from reviewers, with scores of 82 and 76 on Metacritic, respectively.
