BioShock Movie Gets A Key Update About Its Story

The development of the Netflix adaptation of BioShock continues, and recently, a significant aspect of the plot was disclosed. In a recent interview, producer Roy Lee confirmed that the film will be based on the initial BioShock video game.

As a die-hard fan, I shared with The Direct that Netflix prefers to maintain a secretive atmosphere regarding this project, but I was able to squeeze out of them that, indeed, the upcoming film is a definite revival of the 2007 original!

Francis Lawrence, renowned for directing The Hunger Games, has agreed to helm the BioShock movie, confirming that it will be his next project after The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Currently, Sunrise is being filmed in Spain and is scheduled for release in November 2026.

During the interview, it was also stated by Lee that the BioShock movie’s script is currently being developed at this moment. Earlier reports indicated that Michael Green (of Blade Runner 2049 fame) and Justin Rhodes (from Terminator: Dark Fate) have been involved in drafting different versions of the screenplay.

Lee explained that the very existence of Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Long Walk,’ set to release on September 12, could be attributed to delays in the production of the BioShock movie, which required additional script development.

As the script for BioShock was being finalized, Lawrence had already started working on The Long Walk and was set to work on Sunrise during the Reaping next. Therefore, once The Hunger Games are finished, Lee mentioned that it would be time for Lawrence to begin work on BioShock.

In 2024, it was announced by Lee that the BioShock movie underwent changes to transform into a more intimate production, following the shift in leadership at Netflix which emphasized prioritizing quality over quantity and opting for smaller budgets.

According to reports, it seems the remake of the first BioShock game has been called off. As for the upcoming main series title, despite still being in development, it’s encountered some obstacles and even experienced layoffs within its development team.
