As I delve into the captivating tales of Billy Crystal’s formative years, I find myself utterly enthralled by the kaleidoscope of experiences he’s had! Imagine learning filmmaking under Martin Scorsese, a man who was just starting his cinematic journey with ‘Who’s That Knocking at My Door.’ It’s like being taught painting by Picasso when he was still perfecting the cubist style!
Billy Crystal is thinking back on his formative years in Martin Scorsese’s classroom.
In the December 15th installment of “Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist,” I found myself reminiscing about my formative years under Martin Scorsese’s tutelage at New York University, sharing my experiences in a captivating conversation.
At that point in time, he was a graduate student and working on his debut film titled ‘Who’s That Knocking at My Door.’ It was during the years of 1968, 1969, and 1970, as Crystal pointed out in the podcast.
Crystal elaborated on Scorsese’s appearance: “He sported a large beard, oversized spectacles reminiscent of granny glasses, and long hair that reached his shoulders. He resembled an ordinary person. However, while you were editing your film, he would be there lurking behind you, quite terrifying because he would gaze intently at you, was incredibly intense, and spoke swiftly – even then, he spoke faster than he does now, given that he was, in fact, younger by about 50 years.
Scorsese often emulated Howard Hawks by utilizing wide shots in his movies, this was in reaction to the kinds of shots his students were using. Even though many years have gone by since Crystal initially met Scorsese, he notes that Scorsese remains as energetic and spirited as ever.
During the 1960s, Crystal too absorbed the teachings and values that were sweeping across society due to the countercultural revolution.
Crystal remarked, “The West Village was chaotic,” she said. “It was a tough period for America, yet it had its upsides. The struggles against the Vietnam War and the adversity we faced united us… This tumultuous era gave birth to a flourishing of music, literature, and art – an influence that resonates with us even now.
