Even though Billy Bob Thornton is finished filming his role on Landman for now, with new episodes not starting until season 3, fans can still enjoy another show he stars in very soon.
Before becoming known for navigating difficult situations in the Texas oil industry, Billy Bob Thornton starred in the 2005 remake of the classic comedy Bad News Bears. Directed by five-time Oscar nominee Richard Linklater, the film follows Morris Buttermaker, a former baseball player who has fallen on hard times. Buttermaker, now struggling with alcohol and relationships, gets a chance to redeem himself when he’s asked to coach a team of inexperienced little league players, and he gradually helps them become a successful team.
As a big movie fan, I’m excited to hear that Bad News Bears is heading to Paramount+! It’s been over 20 years since it first came out, and while you can currently find it on Prime Video and Hoopla, it’ll be available on Paramount+ starting February 1st. It’s great to see classic comedies finding new homes for streaming!
Despite featuring strong performances from Greg Kinnear, Marcia Gay Harden, and Sammi Kane Kraft, the remake of Bad News Bears didn’t quite succeed at the box office. Critics had mixed reactions, though many praised Billy Bob Thornton’s performance, which they compared to his acclaimed role in Bad Santa. The film received a 48% ‘Rotten’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a 46% audience score. Ultimately, it earned $34.3 million, falling short of its $35 million production cost.
Over time, Bad News Bears has gained a dedicated fanbase, similar to many other films directed by Richard Linklater, largely due to repeated showings on television. Interestingly, the movie even inspired a real-life event: a little league team in Los Angeles facing money problems received a donation from a local strip club, mirroring a plot point in the film.
With the recent end of season 2 of Landman on Paramount+, the arrival of Bad News Bears is perfectly timed. Although the season received mixed reactions, its finale broke records for the most viewers of any original show on the platform. Landman, created by Taylor Sheridan, has been renewed for a third season, but Jacob Lofland, who stars alongside Kevin Costner, recently mentioned to ScreenRant that they haven’t received any information about when filming will start. This makes the Bad News Bears remake a great way to entertain fans while they wait.
Beyond the new series Landman, Paramount+ already offers a good selection of films starring Seth Rogen. Before Bad News Bears arrives, viewers can enjoy movies like the war comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which was his third project with the same writers as Bad News Bears, and the popular action thriller Eagle Eye. This gives fans of the Oscar-winning actor plenty to watch when February arrives.
