Disney announced the reopening date for Big Thunder Mountain, with a lower height requirement.
After being closed for over a year for significant updates, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom will welcome guests again on May 3, 2026. The popular ride has been undergoing extensive work since January 2025.
As a huge Disney fan, I was thrilled to hear that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially reopening at Walt Disney World! It’s been closed for around 16 months, so I’m really excited to ride it again soon.
When the ride reopens, children who are 38 inches or taller will be allowed to ride—a change from the previous height requirement of 40 inches. Disney says this decision follows a thorough safety review.
Refurbishment Focused on Infrastructure and Systems
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad recently received some important updates. Crews replaced parts of the track and improved the ride’s control systems. This kind of work is regular maintenance for popular rides, helping them run smoothly and last longer.

Disney also updated the ride vehicles themselves. These new vehicles are built to be compatible with the updated track and operating systems.
Same Story, New Scene
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad tells the story of Barnabas T. Bullion and the mysterious events that caused his mine to close. The ride focuses on a mining operation that was disturbed by strange forces inside the mountain. Disney has always presented the ride this way, even including a warning that the rumbling sounds suggest guests might not be welcome.

Wyatt Winter recently shared with Good Morning America that guests will now be able to see gold inside the ride’s mine. This is a change from previous versions of the attraction, which hinted at mining but didn’t make the gold itself a central visual element.
The Rainbow Caverns are a new area featuring glowing pools, but they’re more dangerous than they seem.
This area draws inspiration from the ‘Rainbow Caverns,’ an idea first featured in the old Rainbow Caverns Mine Train ride at Disneyland and now being introduced to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Historical Context and Role in Frontierland
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad originally opened at Disneyland in 1979. The following year, in 1980, a similar ride was added to Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland.

This ride is popular because it blends gentle thrills with a captivating story told through its surroundings. It’s designed to be enjoyed by everyone, from families to younger guests who are tall enough to ride.
Operational Impact of the Reopening
With Big Thunder Mountain Railroad now back open, a popular ride in Frontierland is once again available. When rides are closed for a long time, it can change how guests move around the park, as they explore other options while waiting for their favorites to reopen.

The attraction’s return in May 2026 will help spread guests out and better prepare the parks for the busy summer season.
Once we reopen, visitors can expect things to operate as usual. Like any outdoor attraction, availability may change depending on weather or scheduled maintenance.
