Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom will reopen in early May 2026. It closed in January 2025 for a major renovation, and Disney hasn’t announced the exact date yet, only that it will be sometime in early May.
Disney announced on March 12th that the attraction will reopen in early May after a complete refurbishment, promising a refreshed and magical experience.
Closure and Refurbishment
The attraction initially closed on January 6, 2025, for a major renovation. This will include replacing the ride’s track and updating its scenes and special effects. Disney says the project will significantly improve both how the ride functions and the overall experience for guests, from the beginning to the very end.
While the ride is closed, construction workers are making repairs and updates in the Frontierland area. They’re focusing on the track itself, the lines guests use to enter and exit, and the surrounding structures. Some of the old exit line areas have already been taken down, and workers are fixing concrete around the ride’s edges.

I’m so excited for the Jungle Cruise to reopen! Disney says it’s not just a fix-up, but they’re adding ‘a little bit of new magic’ to everything. They’re totally revamping the Rainbow Caverns scene with glowing pools and amazing lights. Plus, they’re updating all the animals and effects throughout the ride – it’s going to look and feel incredible!
The initial permits for the renovation project estimated completion by early 2026, with a possibility of work continuing into the spring. A revised permit now covers work through August 31, 2026, but these extensions are typical for big projects and don’t automatically mean the reopening will be delayed.

Recent reports show the Magic Kingdom attraction was closed for much longer than a standard renovation. Losing the popular Spring Break season was costly, as the ride could have accommodated many more guests during a very busy time. However, Disney expects to have the attraction running again before Memorial Day weekend and the start of the summer season.
Context
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been a popular ride at the Magic Kingdom since it opened in 1979, operating consistently with regular upkeep. This current update is one of the most significant in recent history, focusing on both maintaining the ride and improving the experience for guests.

In 2026, Walt Disney World will continue its regular updates and improvements, including some ride closures and reopenings. Several attractions will be refreshed, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will also be part of these updates as the resort maintains its rides and attractions.
Disney hasn’t shared any information yet about when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen or if there will be any special events to celebrate. If you’re planning a trip to Magic Kingdom in May or later in 2026, keep an eye on Disney’s official website and announcements for the confirmed reopening date.
