Among expansive open-world games such as Elden Ring and future releases like Grand Theft Auto 6, along with continuous service titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Marvel Rivals, there’s no dearth of games that can consume a player’s leisure hours. This abundance, as observed by Bethesda veteran Will Shen, might indicate that the gaming industry has possibly reached a critical point with its seemingly endless game offerings.

Shen, who was the lead designer on Starfield previously, recently expressed his opinions about players shying away from diving into extensive games during an interview on Kiwi Talkz. He acknowledged that certain Bethesda games he worked on, such as Skyrim, which are nearly endless to explore, might have caused player burnout. Nevertheless, Shen argues that the abundance of massive games in today’s market may not give players enough time to fully immerse themselves in new releases due to information overload.

As a gamer myself, I can relate when I say that it’s becoming increasingly challenging to find the time and energy for a game that requires more than 30 or even 100 hours of investment. After all, we already have our favorite games that we return to again and again. Adding another title to that cherished list is no easy feat, it’s always a tall order.

Shen emphasized that games such as Astro Bot and Mouthwashing, which are relatively shorter in length, offer an appealing aspect for players who don’t need to commit large amounts of time. He further added that the brevity of these games fosters a stronger sense of community, as more people can experience the entirety of the game from start to finish.

High-priced AAA game titles often coincide with increasing game production budgets. Andy Gavin, co-founder of Naughty Dog, recently disclosed that one factor leading him to sell his company to Sony was to avert the huge development costs from wiping out everything he and his team had developed before 2001. Skyrocketing expenses are also linked to the unfortunate layoffs in the video game industry last year.
