Todd Howard, the director of The Elder Scrolls VI, attended The Game Awards 2025, but instead of showing off the game, he presented the award for Best Direction to the team behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. This frustrated many fans, who have been eagerly awaiting news about The Elder Scrolls VI for over seven years.
To boost spirits, Game Informer shared comments from three Bethesda developers, originally featured in their latest magazine issue. The developers expressed enthusiasm for what The Elder Scrolls VI will offer and confirmed that development is progressing well. It seems Bethesda is unconcerned by fan criticism and intends to release the game only when it meets their standards, avoiding any rush.
Below you will find the mentioned statements.
Development of The Elder Scrolls VI is going smoothly. Most of the studio is currently focused on it, but we’re accustomed to working on multiple projects at once. We also spend a lot of time in pre-production to ensure everything feels solid before we move forward. It’s a complex process, and while we’re eager to release it as quickly as possible, getting it right is our priority – Todd Howard, director and executive producer of The Elder Scrolls VI.
It’s fantastic to be returning to the world of The Elder Scrolls. It’s been a long time, and the advancements in technology and hardware since our last game are incredible. I’m truly excited about the possibilities this opens up – the rendering capabilities and everything else are mind-blowing! Honestly, sometimes I look at what we’re achieving and realize someone like me from the Skyrim days could never have imagined this. It’s amazing to be a part of, and I hope our longtime fans will appreciate how far we’ve come when they finally get to play the game. You can already see the progress – comparing the original Oblivion to the remastered version is striking. The Elder Scrolls VI feels like an endless source of potential, and as both a developer and someone who’s watched the industry evolve, that’s incredibly exciting. It’s going to be amazing, truly amazing! – Angela Browder, director at Bethesda Game Studios.
We’re making good progress! It’s interesting – we don’t feel the same time pressure from ourselves that players sometimes express. I understand it’s frustrating for fans who are eager to play, but developing these large-scale games takes considerable time. We recently saw the release of GTA 6 delayed again, and honestly, that was a smart move. These massive projects require a lot of refinement and bug fixing. Ultimately, what do players truly want? A rushed game that doesn’t live up to expectations, or a fully polished, high-quality experience? We believe fans will prefer the latter, so we’re taking the time needed to make our game truly great. – Emil Pagliarulo, Design Director at Bethesda Game Studios.
