While games like Alone in the Dark on PCs and the unusual NES title Sweet Home hinted at what was to come, the survival horror genre really took off with the release of Resident Evil on fifth-generation consoles.
What began as a single game featuring an escape from an old, rundown mansion has grown into a popular genre. Many game developers, from small independent studios to large companies, have become skilled at creating these types of games, which is understandable given their popularity since 1996.
Survival horror games have been a staple of every gaming console generation. Like JRPGs and first-person shooters, there’s always a new scary game available, offering players terrifying experiences and challenging escapes.
Looking back at survival horror games over the past five console generations, it’s clear how much the genre has grown and changed. Each new generation of consoles has brought improvements, and the core appeal of these games remains strong.
5. Resident Evil 2
Fifth Generation

While the first Resident Evil established many conventions of the survival horror genre, the second game went far beyond simply being better. It remains a foundational model for designing effective games of this type.
You know, it’s tough to say what really makes a game perfect, but for me, Resident Evil 2 absolutely nails it. The way the game flows, how it’s put together, and the story itself – it’s all just perfect. Seriously, it’s a masterpiece.
The game features stunning pre-rendered backgrounds, and the 3D characters blend into them perfectly. It’s a truly impressive example of how this visual style can be used, especially for its time.
The writing is also quite distinctive for its era. The characters speak in a way that feels both unusual and reminiscent of Shakespeare, which is a style the series never revisited. However, it really enhances the story in this instance.
4. Silent Hill 2
Sixth Generation
For me, the difference in graphics between the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 remains the most dramatic improvement ever seen in gaming. It truly felt like a huge leap forward, as if we’d instantly entered a new generation.
Silent Hill 2 perfectly exemplifies this phenomenon. Even today, it feels like an impossible game to create.
The incredibly realistic faces and grimy hallways of Otherworld are truly impressive. The game boasts some of the most consistently strong artistic vision seen throughout the entire Silent Hill series.
Silent Hill 2 was the best survival horror game on consoles from that era. While games like Rule of Rose and Haunting Ground were good, none of them quite reached its level.
3. The Last Of Us
Seventh Generation
Honestly, out of all these games, I’ve replayed The Last of Us way more than any other. It sounds weird, but even though the story is really dark and heavy, I actually find a strange sort of comfort in how unsettling it is.
The seventh generation of consoles had some great survival horror games, like Dead Space and Condemned 2. However, none of them were quite as impactful or well-received as The Last of Us.
As a huge fan, I can honestly say Joel and Ellie’s trip across the country to find a cure is one of the most intense and terrifying adventures I’ve ever experienced. It’s packed with moments I’ll never forget and seriously creepy encounters that really stuck with me.
What really stands out is how convincingly the game makes you worry about surviving. The limited ammo feels more realistic than in most similar games, and Naughty Dog expertly uses this to build tension and create dramatic moments.
2. Dying Light
Eighth Generation
The wait for Dead Island 2 felt endless, so it was surprising when Techland decided to focus on a brand new game instead. While it’s great to see developers have creative freedom, I was a bit hesitant about Dying Light after that.
I’ve always loved the original Dead Island, so I was hopeful but also a little hesitant to see Techland try something completely different.
I was relieved to see my worries disappear, because Dying Light turned out to be a truly exceptional game – one of the best of its time, and the standout survival horror title of the eighth console generation.
Even now, the game is wonderfully scary when night comes. While it felt different than Dead Island, it still delivered that same enjoyable, desperate-to-survive feeling.
1. Alan Wake 2
Ninth Generation
I was really excited when Sam Lake from Remedy described Alan Wake 2 as their first true survival horror game. While the original had some horror elements, the sequel’s full commitment to the genre was a big reason to get excited.
The biggest fear surrounding Alan Wake 2, after years of anticipation, was that it wouldn’t live up to the hype. Luckily, it exceeded all expectations.
The story follows a classic formula – a protagonist with two sides, scary villains, and a wildly imaginative plot. It hits every expected beat, and even adds a few surprises.
Alan Wake 2 was well worth the wait! It’s a true masterpiece and easily the best survival horror game of this generation.
