It came as a shock to me that the original Star Trek didn’t manage to complete its full broadcast run. The series was sadly terminated after three seasons, yet it transformed into one of the most enduringly popular syndicated TV shows ever produced. Regrettably, Star Trek’s popularity has had its ups and downs throughout history. The Star Trek franchises, other than the original, were mostly aired during its golden era in the 1980s and 90s. Since the cancelation of Enterprise, many devotees have moved on, and the Kurtzman revival has sparked much debate (to put it mildly).

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Kick things off using the benchmark series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Whether you’re a newcomer to the Star Trek universe or not, this is a great point to dive in. Taking place a century after Captain Kirk’s initial voyage, this series transports us onto the USS Enterprise-D under Captain Jean-Luc Picard (portrayed by Patrick Stewart). As the team navigates space, they encounter both physical perils and ethical quandaries. Reflecting the classic Star Trek approach of allegorical storytelling, it also introduces engaging character development and exciting space exploration.

The TV show aired for seven seasons, spanning a total of 178 episodes, from 1987 to 1994, and this was quite unexpected. Interestingly, renowned stage actor Patrick Stewart joined the cast believing it would be a temporary role. He had signed a six-year contract, assuming the series would be terminated. Initially controlled by the Cardassians during their oppressive occupation, the station is now shared between Starfleet and the Bajgorian administration for joint operation. This series centers around Commander Benjamin Sisko, portrayed by Avery Brooks, who takes on the responsibility of helping the people of Bajor rebuild politically and spiritually after years under tyranny, and naturally, things take some surprising twists along the way.

As a die-hard Star Trek fan, I must admit that when Deep Space Nine premiered during The Next Generation’s run, it felt like a daring move by the producers. While TNG was all about soaring ideals and space exploration in a utopian setting, DS9 carved its unique niche-a darker, more complex universe unafraid to delve into moral grey areas. And let me tell you, nothing stirs up a debate quite like a touch of ambiguity!

The series also departed from the conventional episodic format and dove deep into intricate, multi-episode storylines. From interstellar conflicts to religious extremism to space terrorism, the plotlines kept us on our toes and sparked countless philosophical discussions. Sure, TNG had its fair share of ship-hopping adventures, but DS9 takes Star Trek to a whole new level by tackling thought-provoking themes that go beyond mere entertainment. And that’s precisely why I stand firmly behind this series as a writer.

Star Trek: The Original Series

The classic Star Trek TV series focuses on Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew on the USS Enterprise, exploring missions in outer space starting from 1966. Beyond its entertainment value, this show uniquely provided optimism about humankind’s future amidst significant social and political issues such as the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and Cold War tension. Additionally, Star Trek featured many groundbreaking moments, including the first on-screen interracial kiss, a Black actor portraying a high-ranking officer, and a narrative where women could serve in Starfleet. From 1995 to 2001, Voyager chronicled the journey of the Starfleet spacecraft USS Voyager as it navigated its way back to the Alpha Quadrant following an unexpected trip to the galaxy’s outskirts, a staggering 70,000 light-years from its origin. Without discovering advanced warp technology or locating a wormhole, their homecoming will be a long and arduous journey indeed. What a predicament!

In contrast to Deep Space Nine, which delves deeply into topics like faith and governance, Voyager steers us towards the realm of exploration once more. While it does offer an element reminiscent of traditional Star Trek, the adventure isn’t its sole focus. Instead, the series presents well-rounded characters grappling with their ethical compasses amidst crisis. The show poses questions such as: Should we seize technology from another species to expedite our journey home, or remain principled and accept a possible extended stay on arrival?

Although some character developments may seem inconsistent and not all episodes are particularly successful, the overall concept remains one of the most captivating in the entire Star Trek universe.
