Puzzle games are a classic part of the video game world, offering a huge range of experiences – from simple 2D challenges to large, open 3D environments. While many puzzle games have tried new things, not all of them have become truly memorable.
As a huge puzzle game fan, I remember so many titles that were amazing back in the day. A lot of them are still fun to look back on as classics, but honestly, most people have totally forgotten about them now. I thought it would be cool to revisit some of the very best that time has sadly left behind.
10. The Lost Vikings
The Ancestral All-Father of Puzzle Games

The Lost Vikings feels quite dated today, but back in the early 1990s, it was known for having impressive graphics. These games are widely remembered as some of the best 2D puzzle-platformers, and they were incredibly popular with Western players – almost as well-loved as Mario. However, unlike Mario, The Lost Vikings series didn’t remain popular for very long.
I remember when Silicon and Synapse first started – they eventually became the Blizzard Entertainment we all know and love! It’s a shame though, because while a lot of people know Blizzard’s big titles, a really fun game they made, The Lost Vikings, seems to have faded into obscurity. It’s a bit sad that so many people have forgotten about it.
9. Contraption Maker
Limitless Creative Complexity
Inspired by the classic game The Incredible Machine, this puzzle game lets you build and solve intricate contraptions using realistic physics. While it comes with over 100 built-in puzzles, the real fun comes from designing your own levels or tackling creations made by other players.
Contraption Maker lets you build amazing chain reactions using everything from everyday objects like fans and kettles to more surprising items like explosives and footballs. The core of the game is experimenting with its physics to create spectacular, seemingly impossible stunts. Think of the elaborate, over-the-top inventions you see in the opening scenes of a Wallace and Gromit film – that’s the kind of playful, physics-based fun Contraption Maker offers.
8. Antichamber
A Case-Study in Puzzle Variety
Antichamber is a game with a truly unique look that’s instantly recognizable. It features a wide variety of puzzles, almost like a demonstration of clever puzzle design. You’ll use a special tool to create cubes and manipulate your surroundings – drawing lines, opening doors, and completing paths – to move forward.
Even though the game received fantastic reviews on Steam, it hasn’t gotten a sequel or spin-off. This is likely because it was made entirely by one person.
7. The Swapper
A Charming Claymation Puzzle-Platformer
The Swapper is a fantastic sci-fi puzzle game from the PlayStation 3 era that deserves more recognition. Though it’s largely been forgotten since its release, it received rave reviews for its beautiful art, clever levels, and innovative gameplay. Many remember it as a groundbreaking 2D puzzle platformer.
The game lets you create and control copies of yourself, helping you solve puzzles and get past challenges. But what truly makes it special is its charming claymation style and beautiful lighting, which create a cozy and relaxing experience.
6. Crayon Physics Deluxe
Satisfying Your “Inner Child”
Crayon Physics Deluxe is a truly original game, and it’s remarkable that no other game has quite captured its magic. You solve puzzles by drawing – anything from basic bridges to complex rockets. Beyond its delightful art style, the realistic physics are what make it so enjoyable. The way objects behave feels authentic, making it incredibly rewarding to see your drawings come to life.
The simple, childlike drawings in Crayon Physics Deluxe can be deceiving. Many of the puzzles are actually quite challenging and require a clever approach. It’s a shame there haven’t been any new versions of the game since the original release in 2008.
5. Lemmings
What Happened To These Guys?
Lemmings is a beloved game that many older gamers fondly remember. It was incredibly influential, inspiring numerous puzzle games that came after it. Players had to use clever thinking to guide their lemmings through challenging levels, and the original game, released in 1991, quickly became a huge hit with over 100 levels to conquer.
Since its release, the game has spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, including a well-received remake in 2006. Despite these follow-ups, none have reached the same iconic status as the original version on the Amiga. Similar to the classic Worms games, Lemmings is fondly remembered as a symbol of gaming’s simpler days.
4. World of Goo
Too Little Too Late
World of Goo was a truly original game when it launched, and nothing quite like it has appeared since. You build structures using small, black ‘Goo’ balls to navigate each level. Though the idea seems simple, the game’s physics can be surprisingly difficult to master.
While a sequel released in 2025 tried to bring the series back, it didn’t achieve the same popularity as the first game. It’s unfortunate, as the original game’s charming art style paired with challenging puzzles and well-designed levels created a uniquely fun and engaging experience. With a few tweaks, the series could potentially regain its former glory.
3. Escape From Rosecliffe Island
A Satisfying Word-Puzzle Experience
| Released | March 3, 2009 |
| Publisher | PopCap Games |
| Developer(s) | SpinTop games |
Escape From Rosecliffe Island is one of the best point-and-click puzzle games you’ll find. It’s a hidden gem that skillfully mixes challenging puzzles with a strangely unsettling, yet whimsical, visual style, creating a truly unique and memorable atmosphere.
You start the game stranded on a mysterious island and must find keys to unlock each level and advance through beautifully crafted environments. The gameplay mainly revolves around solving word puzzles, where you’ll receive clues and unusual hints to help you figure out the solutions.

The puzzles vary from easy to incredibly challenging, and you’ll find yourself re-examining every corner of the garden or art studio to solve them. Although the game has a slightly mysterious atmosphere, it’s actually quite cheerful and makes for a wonderfully relaxing puzzle experience.
2. Ballance
Simple Yet Extremely Effective
| Released | April 2, 2004 |
| Publisher | Atari Europe |
| Developer(s) | Cyparade |
Ballance is a memorable puzzle game that’s hard to forget once you’ve played it. The game is simple but visually striking, and challenges players to control a ball that can change into wood, paper, or stone. Each material affects how the ball moves, adding to the puzzle-solving experience.
In this game, players race through challenging levels, trying to reach the finish line as fast as possible without falling off the course. It’s incredibly addictive, and many of the levels are stunningly designed, making them a pleasure to play. Though not widely remembered today, Ballance shows how a simple idea, executed well, can create a truly great gaming experience.
1. Kororinpa: Marble Mania
A Classic Wii Puzzle Gem
| Released | March 20, 2007 |
| Publisher | Hudson Soft |
| Developer(s) | Hudson Soft |
Okay, so I’ve played a lot of marble-rolling games, and Kororinpa: Marble Mania and its sequel, Marble Saga, are seriously next-level. They remind me a bit of Ballance, but way more wild and complicated. Instead of just switching between three different types, my marble can transform into tons of different things, each with its own unique way of moving. Plus, the levels are just beautifully detailed – it’s a really immersive experience.
The core gameplay revolves around carefully tilting the Wii controller to balance a ball along a tricky course. It’s a remarkably engaging single-player experience – you can easily spend hours playing, and finishing each level feels truly rewarding. Sadly, there haven’t been any new games in the series since 2009, and a revival doesn’t seem likely at this point.
