Plus, it’s awesome to have all the modern quality-of-life features we’ve come to expect from newer Pokémon games, combined with a story that’s actually pretty engaging. Okay, the graphics aren’t amazing, but honestly, that’s a small price to pay for everything else this game offers. You definitely shouldn’t miss out on this one!

7. Pokémon Brown

If you’re familiar with games like Pokémon Brown or Pokémon Prism, you’ve likely been a Pokémon fan for quite some time. Pokémon Brown was released way back in 2004, when I was a child, and it really changed the game.

I still play Pokémon Brown, and honestly, it’s amazing how much they’ve added over the years! They kept things interesting with new types like Gas, Wood, and Sound, plus all the Pokémon from later generations and everything that came with them. You can travel through the new Tunod region, the Rankor Archipelago, and even revisit Johto! While exploring multiple regions is common in fan-made Pokémon games now, it was a really exciting feature when Pokémon Glazed first came out.

Pokémon Gaia is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a fresh Pokémon adventure that still feels familiar. It captures the spirit of the original games remarkably well, offering a classic experience without just being a rehash of the main series titles.

Explore a stunning new area in Gaia packed with strange archaeological puzzles, vibrant caves, and memorable, often ruthless, characters! The game offers a good level of challenge – it’s difficult enough to be engaging, but won’t leave you feeling overwhelmed.

The game includes all the features modern players expect, plus exciting new ideas and a custom-made soundtrack. It really has everything you could ask for!

4. Pokémon Lazarus

Ilios Region

Okay, as a huge fan of Pokémon Emerald Seaglass and how beautifully different it looked, I’m SO excited to tell you about Pokémon Lazarus! It just dropped as a rom hack, and honestly, it’s amazing! If you loved Seaglass, you need to check this out.

Inspired by the Greek Islands, Lazarus features the familiar, beloved graphics, but completely redesigned for fresh environments and scenery. Players will face a new villainous team, and can choose from multiple difficulty levels for a more challenging experience.

If you’re feeling a bit worn out by the usual Pokémon gameplay, there are fun new minigames to try, like fishing! This isn’t your typical stand-and-cast fishing either – it’s a much more engaging experience! Keep an eye on Lazarus; it seems like it could become a fan favorite!

3. Pokémon Saiph 2

You know what’s weird? When I chat with other gamers about ROM hacks, the Sors and Saiph series never get mentioned. That’s really strange to me, because these games are clearly made with a ton of passion. The characters are awesome, and the story is super complex – it’s one of those things you really only get by playing all the games in the series. It unfolds so slowly, it’s worth the whole journey!

While some people might just enjoy the gameplay itself, I think a strong story is crucial for a really good rom hack. This one does a great job of drawing you in – it starts with a plane crash and focuses on recovering what’s been lost, quickly immersing you in its world.

Plus, there’s a ton of new stuff to enjoy, like Hero and Vigilante modes, smarter battles, Ancient Regression, and the Battle Frontier – which is my personal highlight! This game really has something for all Pokémon trainers. Now we’re just eagerly awaiting the release of Sorla 2 – it’s almost here!

2. Pokémon Unbound

Borrius Region

It wasn’t a surprise at all. Whenever a new area is created, Borrius always comes to mind. I’ve honestly lost count of how many times I’ve started my adventures there, fighting against the Shadows in that cold mountain town.

Whenever I think about Unbound, the first thing that comes to mind is just how polished it is. Seriously, everything feels so well-done – the cutscenes are great, the little minigames are totally unique, and even the different difficulty settings are well thought out. Plus, the cities and backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous – I haven’t seen anything quite like them in other games.

This game is genuinely challenging and engaging, with clever boss fights, puzzles, lots of collectibles, and a compelling quest system. It’s surprisingly better than many of the classic Pokémon games, especially considering it was created by fans. A lot of people are talking about Pokémon Unbound, and it absolutely deserves the attention – its ambition and scale are incredible.

1. Pokémon Odyssey

Talrega Region / Yggdrasil Labyrinth

I couldn’t limit this rom hack to just one region in the title, because Pokémon Odyssey is far more expansive than that. It does something truly unique – it adds an entirely new world located completely underground, deep within the Earth.

Pokémon Odyssey follows Nyx as they venture into a hidden labyrinth beneath the World Tree, searching for lost treasure. Along the way, they become involved in an age-old battle between aliens and evil forces, relying on their Pokémon to combat the growing darkness.

You’ll discover both the amazing depths of the Labyrinth and the many islands of the Talrega Archipelago. This game takes the familiar Pokémon experience and expands on it, creating something deeper and more captivating.
