In wrapping up my look at the outstanding performances from 2024, I want to highlight the Lead Actor category, which showcases some of the best acting talent this year. With so many strong contenders, it’s been tough to narrow the list down to only five. But that’s what these roundups require, so let’s get started! Here are my top 5 Lead Actor performances, along with a few honorable mentions who truly impressed me.

Notable Performances: Cillian Murphy (in “Small Things Like These”), Victor Clavijo (from “The Wait”), Ralph Fiennes (in “Conclave”), Jonas Dassler (for “Bonhoeffer”), David Dastmalchian (featured in “Late Night with the Devil”), Colman Domingo (starring in “Sing Sing”), Jesse Eisenberg (appearing in “A Real Pain”), John David Washington (in “The Piano Lesson”), Nicholas Hoult (as Juror #2), Austin Butler (in “The Bikeriders”), James McAvoy (in “Speak No Evil”), Kevin Costner (in “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1”) and Michael Keaton (in “Goodrich”).

#5 – Hugh Grant (“Heretic”)

I’m thoroughly enjoying this current chapter in Hugh Grant’s already exceptional film career. His recent role in the horror thriller “Heretic” serves as further proof. “Heretic,” without a doubt, has been the most dialogue-heavy horror movie of the year, but it suits Grant perfectly. He is both disarmingly humorous and devilishly charismatic, yet when the film demands it, he becomes truly chilling. This performance is undoubtedly one of the most captivating of the year.

#4 – Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”)

In “The Brutalist”, Adrien Brody once again showcases his versatility and exceptional acting skills across various genres. Here, he portrays a skilled architect and Holocaust survivor who moves to America. Just as he did in “The Pianist”, Brody brings immense passion to the role, a performance that deserves equal recognition, even though the film itself may not be as strong.

#3 – Jean Dujardin (“On the Wandering Paths”)

On the other side of the ocean, Jean Dujardin became well-known due to his Oscar-winning role in “The Artist” in 2011. However, he’s starred in many significant films before and since then, such as this year’s “On the Wandering Paths”. What sets Dujardin apart is not just his abundant charm but the profound humanity that illuminates his finest performances. And that’s certainly evident in this moving and heartfelt portrayal.

#2 – Jude Law (“The Order”)

For quite some time, I’ve held Jude Law in high regard. His recent body of work has only fueled my admiration even more. Among his latest projects, none have surpassed “The Order,” which showcases one of the finest performances of his 35-year career. With a thick mustache and an air of weariness, Law delivers a compelling portrayal of a dedicated yet troubled FBI agent hunting down a rural white supremacist group in this series. “The Order” has been one of the most pleasant surprises of 2024, and Jude Law plays a crucial role in its success.

#1 – Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”)

Frankly speaking, I wasn’t particularly hopeful about Timothée Chalamet portraying Bob Dylan. However, just as he did in “Dune: Part Two” this year, the talented actor left me astonished. Besides his captivating performance, Chalamet sings and composes his own songs, adding depth to his work. This role is undoubtedly one of the toughest of the year, but Chalamet’s skillful blend of music and drama has made it my top pick.
