A solid formation can really let your team shine and play to its strengths. But mess it up, and you’ll be left totally open on the pitch. Honestly, no matter if you like a super aggressive, pressing style or a more patient, passing game – like tiki-taka – there’s a formation out there that’ll work for you. It’s all about finding the right fit!

- Why are these the best FC 26 formations?
This guide will walk you through the most effective formations in FC 26, detailing what each one does well and where it might struggle. We’ll also cover the kinds of players you’ll need to succeed with each formation. Whether you prefer reliable options like 4-2-3-1 Wide or want to try something different like 3-5-2, we’ll help you choose the best setup to win your next Division Rivals match or Career Mode season.
4-1-2-1-2 Narrow
We’re excited to see the 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow formation making a comeback! While this diamond shape wasn’t very popular in the FC 25 meta, it’s starting to gain traction again. It’s a delightful change of pace.
This tactic is built for players who aim to control the game by keeping possession in midfield. It relies on fast, short passes and players making runs from deep to break down the opposing defense. Your CDM provides stability and control alongside two dynamic, box-to-box central midfielders. A creative CAM then operates as a Shadow Striker, supporting the attack.
Having two forwards allows them to combine effectively or maintain possession while waiting for support from midfielders. This formation is naturally compact, meaning that if possession is lost, the defensive midfielder (CDM) should be positioned to cut out passes and win the ball back. They need to anticipate the play and be ready to intercept the right pass. Learn more about formations.
This setup is most effective when you have strong fullbacks and a skilled defensive midfielder (CDM) providing cover. Because the formation is fairly predictable, opposing attackers can often exploit the gaps in your defense and break through the backline.
Here’s how we set up our squad:
- Code: AxZKwE4#K8S
- Build up Style: Counter
- Defensive Approach: High
- Goalkeeper: Sweeper Keeper, Balanced
- LB / RB: Fullback, Balanced
- CB: Defender, Defend
- CDM: Deep-Lying Playmaker, Defend
- CM: Box-to-Box, Balanced
- CAM: Shadow Striker, Balanced
- ST: Poacher, Attack / Advanced Forward, Attack
4-2-3-1 Wide
If you played a 4-2-3-1 formation previously, this setup will seem quite similar. Featuring four defenders, two defensive midfielders (CDMs), and one attacking midfielder (CAM), this is widely considered to be one of the most well-rounded formations available.
This setup gives you command during the switch from defense to attack, and provides numerous ways to create chances. The CAM – functioning as a Shadow Striker – connects the central striker with the wingers, who should move towards the center to receive passes. Defensively, two CDMs bolster the four defenders, working to intercept passes and disrupt the opposition’s build-up play. Learn more about this formation.
We’ve designed this tactic to include the Central Defensive Midfielders (CDMs) in building attacks. However, we suggest using a striker who is capable of playing as an Advanced Forward. We’ve instructed our fullbacks to prioritize defense, but if you prefer to create more width, you can change their instructions to Balanced.
Here’s how we’ve set it up:
- Code: GZewNW4MwiDo
- Build up Style: Short Passing
- Defensive Approach: High
- Goalkeeper: Ball-Playing Keeper, Build Up
- LB / RB: Fullback, Defend
- CB: Defender/Ball-Playing Defender, Defend
- CDM (L): Deep-Lying Playmaker, Build Up
- CDM (R): Deep-Lying Playmaker, Build Up
- LM: Inside Forward, Balanced
- RM: Inside Forward, Balanced
- CAM: Shadow Striker, Attack
- ST: Advanced Forward, Attack
4-4-2 Holding
This is a widely used formation in the game – and it’s a great choice especially if you’re new to it. The reason is that it provides a well-rounded balance between your defense, midfield, and attacking players on the field.
This formation uses four players across the back and in midfield, providing a solid defense. It also gives you attacking options with two forwards. The wide midfielders and fullbacks can push forward quickly on the counter-attack, creating scoring opportunities.
This well-rounded setup makes it tough for opponents to find weaknesses to exploit. However, having just two players in the center of midfield can leave you outnumbered when facing teams that heavily populate that area of the field.
To address this challenge, we’ve chosen the Holding version of the formation. This strengthens our defense because the AI defending in FC 26 isn’t as strong as before. This change gives us two CDMs (defensive midfielders) instead of two central midfielders. Learn more about the formation.
Here are our tactics in full:
- Code: SBs8ciEacQ%U
- Build up Style: Balanced
- Defensive Approach: High
- Goalkeeper: Goalkeeper, Defend
- LB / RB: Fullback, Balanced
- CB: Defender, Defend
- CDM: Deep-Lying Playmaker, Build Up
- LM: Inside Forward, Balanced
- RM: Inside Forward, Balanced
- ST: False 9, Attack
- ST: Advanced Forward, Attack
4-3-3 Holding
This setup is a really flexible way to attack, offering good width on the field, solid control of the midfield, and obvious chances to score. Having three forwards allows you to easily pull apart most defenses with fast passing, utilizing both the wings and the middle of the field.
A 4-3-3 formation is very effective for teams that prefer fast, direct counter-attacks and utilize the width of the field. If you’d rather control the pace of the game, your midfielders can manage things, with the fullbacks dropping deeper to create more room. However, a potential weakness is that this setup can be overwhelmed by certain other formations. If your midfielders lose possession while pushing forward, you might find it difficult to regain control of the ball.
To address this challenge, we’ve structured our team with a defensive midfielder (CDM) who shields the defense. They are supported by a deep-lying playmaker and another playmaker positioned in central midfield. Our wingers will stretch the play and provide width going forward, and we’ll have one wingback available to help both attack and defense.
If you choose this setup, you’ll require quick, powerful wingers with good shooting and passing abilities. You’ll also need a skilled striker who can reliably score goals from any position inside the penalty area.
Here’s how we’d set this up:
- Code: EBdk%umK%GAm
- Build up Style: Short Passing
- Defensive Approach: High
- Goalkeeper: Goalkeeper, Defend
- LB: Fullback, Defend
- RB: Wingback, Support
- CB: Defender, Defend
- CDM: Holding, Ball-Winning
- CM: Deep-Lying Playmaker, Build-Up / Playmaker, Attack
- LW: Inside Forward, Balanced
- RM: Wide Playmaker, Attack
- ST: False 9, Attack
Why are these the best FC 26 formations?
The game offers 29 different formations, so you might be curious why we highlighted only four. The reason is straightforward: these four formations perform best in the current meta, which favors close formations and fast passing. This year’s improvements to the AI defending mean you need to focus on maintaining a solid shape, blocking passing lanes, and transitioning quickly between defense and attack. Learn more about the meta.
All the formations we’ve discussed provide a solid defense, recognizable attacking moves, and the flexibility to give you an advantage in competitive games. The 4-1-2-1 Narrow focuses on controlling the middle of the field with plenty of passing options and creates triangles, the 4-2-3-1 Wide blends a strong structure with creative freedom, the 4-4-2 Holding offers a well-rounded base for your tactics, and the 4-3-3 uses speed and width to challenge the opposing defense.
Naturally, the most effective formations in FC 26 will likely evolve with future game updates. However, right now, these are the strategies we recommend to give you an advantage in Division Rivals, Ultimate Team, and Career Mode.
