Where Winds Meet offers a wide variety of weapons and martial arts, but upgrading them can be expensive. It’s usually best to focus on mastering just two or three styles, as you won’t have the time or resources to upgrade everything. With so many options available, choosing the right ones can be tough. This guide will cover some strong and effective weapon combinations for the early game, along with the gear and special abilities that complement them.
Nameless Sword & Spear
Well-Rounded DPS Build
In Where Winds Meet, the two weapons you begin with are powerful enough to handle most of the game. The Nameless Sword is balanced and excels at both getting close to enemies and dealing significant area-of-effect damage with its energy waves. The Nameless Spear, on the other hand, lets you lock enemies down by pinning them while you attack.
Using both Nameless weapons together means you’ll have less healing and support compared to other weapon combinations. We suggest this setup for players who are already familiar with Soulsike games and are good at dodging and blocking attacks. If you’re not as comfortable with those skills, it’s better to use just one Nameless weapon alongside a different weapon with a helpful ability, like the Panacea Fan.
These two fighting styles both depend heavily on powerful, charged attacks. To get the most out of them, you’ll want to gain levels and earn Talent Points quickly.
Recommended Inner Ways and Gear Sets
| Name | Type | Effect |
| Sword Morph | Inner Way (Nameless Sword) | Nameless Sword charged heavy attacks launch additional sword waves. |
| Mountain’s Might | Inner Way (Nameless Spear) | Using the Qiankun’s Lock ability grants Endless Gale, reducing your Endurance consumption for a short duration. |
| Battle Anthem | Inner Way (General) | Increase the damage of your charged skills agains bosses. |
| Wildfire Spark | Inner Way (General) | Reduces Endurance consumption. |
| Jadeware Set | Gear Set | Increases your Max Physical Attack. When casting a Martial Art Skill, you gain increased Affinity DMG and deal more Affinity DMG to targets below 40% Qi for. This effect lasts 12 seconds, and has a 30 second cooldown. |
In the main story, you’ll automatically unlock Sword Morph for the Nameless Sword. This special ability adds extra energy blades to its charged heavy attack, making it even more powerful.
Panacea Fan & Vernal Umbrella
Ranged DPS Starter Build
As a fan of ranged builds, I’ve found the Vernal Umbrella and Panacea Fan are the way to go! They both let you attack from a distance, but they do things a little differently. The Vernal Umbrella is all about dealing damage, while the Panacea Fan is focused on healing. It’s awesome for hitting enemies from afar, though honestly, because the Fan isn’t meant for big damage, fights can sometimes take a bit longer to finish compared to other weapon combinations.
If you want to try this weapon combination, first get the Vernal Umbrella from Qi Sheng after completing his initial quest. The martial arts style that goes with it won’t be unlocked until later in the game. You can find the Panacea Fan later on in the Qinghe region.
Recommended Inner Ways and Gear Sets
| Name | Type | Effect |
| Blossom Barrage | Inner Way (Vernal Umbrella) | The Spring Sorrow skill can now hold up to 2 stacks. Hitting targets increases the damage they take from your Ballistic Skills. |
| Royal Remedy | Inner Way (Panacea Fan) | Increase the healing done by Panacea Fan clones. |
| Star Reacher | Inner Way (General) | Increase the damage you deal against airborne enemies. |
| Thunderous Bloom | Inner Way (General) | Gain Spring Thunder after moving at least 15 meters within 3 seconds. Spring Thunder increases the damage of your next heavy attack or airborne attack within 12 seconds. |
| Veil of the Willow Set | Gear Set | Increases your Precision Rate. After a light/airborne light attack, gain increased heavy/airborne heavy attack damage, and vice versa. |
The Panacea Fan is a great support weapon to use in Where Winds Meet. It helps you survive battles with some healing, though it won’t keep you alive on its own during boss fights – especially the first time you face a story boss, when its healing effect is weaker.
Thundercry Blade & Stormbreaker Spear
Ultimate Tank Combo
This weapon combination prioritizes staying alive, managing groups of enemies, and strong defense, though it’s still capable of dealing significant damage. The Thundercry Blade excels at both hitting multiple enemies and single targets with its charged attacks, and it can also create a shield when you’re in trouble. The Stormbreaker Spear, on the other hand, focuses on boosting your own abilities, weakening enemies, and knocking them off balance – making it a perfect match for the Thundercry Blade.
These powerful weapons aren’t without drawbacks. Both the Thundercry Blade and Stormbreaker Spear have relatively weak and slow regular attacks. They really shine with their powerful charged attacks, so if you prefer quickly hitting enemies repeatedly, this combination might not be ideal.
Recommended Inner Ways and Gear Sets
| Name | Type | Effect |
| Exquisite Scenery | Inner Way (Thundercry Blade) | Defending with the Thundercry Blade activates a special counter-attack. |
| Rock Solid | Inner Way (Stormbreaker Spear) | Increase the damage reduction from Stormbreaker Spear’s Storm Roar ability after taunting enemies. All damage you deal is reduced when the damage reduction is active. |
| Trapped Beast | Inner Way (General) | Taking damage that sends you below 30% HP forms a shield around you worth 30% of your max HP. |
| Art of Resistance | Inner Way (General) | Increases the duration of HP shields and the bonus effects of their sources on you. |
| Rainwhisper Set | Gear Set | Increases your Max HP. All damage and healing are increased, and even more so when you have a shield. |
| Moonflare Set | Gear Set | Increases your Max HP. When attacking while defending, you have a chance to create a shield that absorbs up to 10% Max HP’s worth of damage. If you already have a shield, restore HP instead. |
Infernal Twinblades & Panacea Fan
The Boss Killer Setup
Unlike martial arts like Thundercry Blade and Stormbreaker Spear which focus on slow, powerful attacks, the Infernal Twinblades are designed for fast-paced combos. Instead of relying on strong single hits, this style puts you into a boosted state, making your quick attacks much more effective.
The Infernal Twinblades reward constant attacking, and become even more effective thanks to a boost in critical hit chance when powered up. Combining them with the Panacea Fan lets you play more aggressively, leading to much higher damage output – just keep the attacks coming!
Recommended Inner Ways and Gear Sets
| Name | Type | Effect |
| Echoes of Oblivion | Inner Way (Infernal Twinblades) | Light attacks inflict Sin, while Flamelash light attacks inflict Karma. Twinblade attacks against these targets ignore part of their Physical Resistance and Bamboocut Resistance respectively. |
| Breaking Point | Inner Way (General) | Hitting Exhausted enemies with a critical hit applies a Disintegration stack on you for 3 seconds, up to 3 stacks. Gain bonus Physical Penetration and Critical DMG per stack. |
| Calmwaters Set | Gear Set | Increases Physical Defense. Perfectly dodging an enemy attack has a chance to restore HP and Endurance. |
| Swallocall Set | Gear Set | Light attacks deal more damage against Exhausted enemeis and targets with less than 40% Qi. |
Okay, so I just found out that once you get to Kaifeng in Where Winds Meet, you can unlock the Mortal Rope Dart! It’s awesome because it works really well with the Infernal Twinblades – they’re both part of the Bamboocut weapon style. This is a game-changer because it gives you way more options for building your character, letting you use Inner Ways and item effects that boost both weapons. I’m excited to try it out!
Strategic Sword & Heavenquaker Spear
Bleeds for Days
If you prefer a calculated, but fast-paced combat style, consider combining the Strategic Sword and Heavenquaker Spear. The Strategic Sword causes enemies to bleed over time, and the Heavenquaker Spear boosts damage-over-time effects, creating a powerful synergy. The Heavenquaker Spear excels at handling multiple enemies, while the Strategic Sword, especially when upgraded with the Sword Horizon Inner Way, is fantastic for quickly defeating tough opponents like bosses and elites.
You won’t find these martial arts styles among Qi Sheng’s initial weapons, but they are available in the Qinghe region. To find out how to unlock any weapon in the game, check the Abilities menu and select the weapon you’re interested in.
Recommended Inner Ways and Gear Sets
| Name | Type | Effect |
| Sword Horizon | Inner Way (Strategic Sword) | Your Strategic Sword charged heavy attacks and Martial Arts Skills gain follow-up attacks that deal detonate Bleed stacks. |
| Wolfchaser’s Art | Inner Way (Heavenquaker Spear) | The combo number required to meet Heavenquaker Spear’s Sober Sorrow skill buffs is decreased from 5/10 to 4/8. When Sober Sorrow hits a bleeding boss, you have a chance to increase your combo counter by 1. |
| Fivefold Bleed | Inner Way (General) | Each of your hits have a chance to inflict Weeping Blood, which deals damage over time. Upon reaching 5 stacks of Weeping Blood, the stacks are consumed to deal a burst of damage to your target. |
| Hawkwing Set | Gear Set | Gain bonus Affinity Rate. When you deal Affinity Damage, gain a stack of Hawkwing, which increases Physical Attack. Stacks up to 5 times. |
| Eaglerise Set | Gear Set | Gain bonus Physical Defense. Dealing damage over time or healing grants a stack of Eaglerise, up to 5 stacks. Each stack reduces the damage you take. At max stacks, gain Eagle Guard, which reduces the next incoming instance of damage by 90% (45% against bosses). |
Mystic Skills
Okay, so in Where Winds Meet, Mystic Skills are basically moves you can pull off without needing a specific weapon equipped. They’re either magical, fighting-based, or sometimes a mix of both! There are a bunch of useful ones early on, but if I had to pick just one to learn, it’d be Drunken Poet. It’s awesome for really hammering on an enemy when you’ve broken their stance, and thankfully, it’s pretty easy to unlock. All you gotta do is… well, get seriously drunk – like, alcohol poisoning level drunk – to get it!
Okay, so for tackling the game’s PvE content, Drunken Poet is honestly all you really need for most battles. But if you’re looking to jump into PvP, you’ll want to grab Talon Strike. You can get it by heading near the Palace of Annals and watching for an eagle hunting – it drops when it swoops down to grab food.
