It’s hard to believe A24 hasn’t always been around, but the company was founded just 14 years ago, in 2012. Since then, it’s quickly become a major force in film, creating and releasing unique movies that stand apart from typical Hollywood productions. A24 has become so popular that it’s built a devoted fanbase, much like Marvel Studios. In fact, Marvel even seemed to take inspiration from A24’s distinctive approach when creating a trailer for their movie Thunderbolts.
The trailer for Thunderbolts, which had a similar vibe to A24 films, was just a preview of how strong A24’s 2025 lineup is shaping up to be. They’re releasing exciting new movies from well-respected directors like Celine Song and Ari Aster, as well as solo projects from Bennie and Josh Safdie. A24 is already poised for success during awards season, with Marty Supreme generating buzz and potentially earning Timothée Chalamet his first Oscar. Between a globally successful romance earning $100 million, a film showcasing a top comedic talent, and a strong focus on female directors, A24 has put together an incredible slate of movies for 2025.

‘Highest 2 Lowest’

A24 / Apple Original Films
I’m so excited about Spike Lee’s new film, Highest 2 Lowest! It’s basically his take on Akira Kurosawa’s High to Low, which is amazing to me – two directing legends influencing each other. Plus, it’s the fifth time Spike Lee has worked with Denzel Washington, and he’s playing a music producer who gets caught up in a really dangerous ransom scheme. It’s going to be incredible!
Considering Spike Lee’s impressive background, the fact that this film is a remake of a Kurosawa classic, and his history of successful collaborations with Denzel Washington – including films like Malcolm X and Inside Man – Highest 2 Lowest faced high expectations, and some viewers might find it didn’t fully live up to them. Nevertheless, it’s a thrilling and unique film experience, something only a director like Spike Lee could create. The film generally received positive feedback, with Denzel Washington’s performance earning particularly enthusiastic praise.

‘Warfare’

A24
I’m really excited about this new movie, Warfare! It’s directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, and it’s deeply personal for Mendoza – it’s inspired by his own time as a Navy SEAL in Iraq. He actually used stories and experiences from other soldiers he served with, and the movie unfolds in real time, which sounds incredibly intense. It reminds me a lot of Black Hawk Down in terms of its gritty realism. Plus, it’s packed with amazing young actors who are really going to be huge stars – Joseph Quinn, Will Poulter, Charles Melton, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, and D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai are all in it, and I can’t wait to see them perform.
The film Warfare creates a similar feeling to Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, immersing the audience directly into the brutal reality of combat. Some viewers might mistakenly see it as pro-military, but the film is actually a harrowing depiction of war. Its intense sound design – filled with gunfire and screams – emphasizes that warfare isn’t glorious; it’s a terrifying experience that can have a lasting and devastating impact on individuals.

‘Bring Her Back’

A24
Following the success of their horror film Talk to Me, Danny and Michael Philippou have created another frightening movie called Bring Her Back. The film centers on Andy and Piper, step-siblings navigating the foster care system who are welcomed into the home of Laura. However, Laura, who is struggling with grief, develops a dark plan to separate the step-siblings, driven by unsettling occult beliefs.
Wow, 2025 was a year for horror, and honestly, Bring Her Back really stuck with me. There’s a scene with a kitchen knife…let’s just say I’ll never look at one the same way again! But beyond the scares, Sally Hawkins delivers an absolutely incredible performance. Thinking about the year as a whole, alongside films like Weapons, Sinners, and Final Destination Bloodlines, Bring Her Back really helped make 2025 special. And Danny and Michael Philippou? After Bring Her Back and Talk to Me, they’ve definitely established themselves as filmmakers to watch in the horror genre – they’re the real deal.

‘Materialists’

A24
Celine Song, the director of the acclaimed film Past Lives, returns with Materialists. This new film also explores a love triangle, starring Dakota Johnson as a matchmaker caught between two very different men: a rich, charismatic playboy (Pedro Pascal) and her longtime boyfriend, an actor (Chris Evans), with whom she still shares a connection. While it might seem like a typical romantic comedy, Materialists is actually a more mature and dramatic love story, playfully referencing classic rom-coms like Pretty Woman, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and The Wedding Planner through its visuals and themes.
The film Materialists offers a gentle and modern look at the instability often found in modern dating. While it’s sparked a lot of debate, much of the discussion revolves around its romantic storylines and how viewers wanted them to end—a sign that the film was engaging. Materialists clearly resonated with audiences, earning $108 million globally, making it the studio’s third highest-grossing film after Everything Everywhere All At Once and Civil War.

‘Eternity’

A24
With Materialists, director I. Marlene King revisits the classic romantic comedies set in cities that were popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. Her other new film, Eternity, takes inspiration from the grand, emotional love stories of the 1930s and 40s, but reimagines them in a modern setting—specifically, a fantastical afterlife that feels surprisingly real. The film centers on Elizabeth Olsen, who plays a woman in the afterlife facing a difficult choice between her husband of 65 years (Miles Teller) and her first love (Callum Turner), who died in the Korean War when they were young.
I absolutely loved Eternity! It’s genuinely funny – the script is clever, and there are so many little visual jokes happening in the background that you’ll catch on repeat viewings. But it’s not just funny; it really makes you think about what love means, and I found myself completely swept up in the emotional story. By the end, I was both laughing and tearing up – it’s a classic romance in that way! It feels like a movie that would have been a huge hit from a major studio twenty years ago, but it’s great that A24 is willing to take a chance on something different these days. Eternity manages to be both wonderfully old-fashioned and surprisingly fresh – it’s a really special film.

‘Friendship’

A24
Honestly, is anything funnier than Tim Robinson just yelling? He’s had an amazing 2025! Everyone’s talking about his HBO series, The Chair Company, and now his new movie with A24, Friendship. It’s a really funny, but also kind of unsettling, film about this guy, Craig (played by Robinson), who just wants to be friends with his cool new neighbor, Austin (Paul Rudd). But things go hilariously wrong after a super awkward get-together. Craig totally makes everyone uncomfortable, and Austin tries to end the friendship. That’s when Craig really starts to lose it – it’s brilliantly weird and funny to watch!
The new movie Friendship feels tailor-made for comedian Billy Robinson – it’s surprising to learn he wasn’t involved in writing it! It’s a truly uncomfortable, yet hilarious, comedy that will have you squirming in your seat as Robinson’s character creates increasingly awkward situations. Friendship is a brilliantly cringe-worthy and funny film, solidifying Robinson’s status as a rising comedy star. It even gave us a memorable meme: “There’s a new Marvel out that’s supposed to be nuts.”

‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’

Sundance Institute
Rose Byrne delivers what could be her strongest performance yet in “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.” She plays Linda, a mother and psychiatrist, who is compelled to move into a hotel with her daughter, who requires feeding through a tube, after their home is damaged by a flood. This gripping and intensely stressful thriller follows Linda as she unravels, mirroring the collapse around her, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most emotionally disturbing films of 2025.
Rose Byrne has been widely praised for her work in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. She’s recently received accolades including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and she won Best Actress awards from the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. The film is a must-see, both for its quality and for a particularly memorable supporting performance by Conan O’Brien.

‘On Becoming a Guinea Fowl’

A24
Rungano Noyoni’s film, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, opens with Shula (Susan Chardy) finding her uncle Fred dead by the roadside. The story then centers on her family as they observe the customs of a traditional Zambian funeral, and Shula and her cousins uncover troubling secrets about their uncle that other family members would rather ignore.
“On Becoming a Guinea Fowl” is a deeply moving exploration of grief, focusing on how families cope with the terrible deeds of a loved one and the way even abusers can be shielded after death. Susan Chrady gives a stunning performance in her first acting role, portraying years of hidden trauma with remarkable subtlety. The film reveals that grief isn’t always about mourning the person who’s gone, but about safeguarding and protecting those who remain.
2
‘Marty Supreme’

A24
The trailer for Marty Supreme has generated a lot of excitement, and many are predicting it will be one of the top films of 2025. Directed by Josh Sadfie, the movie stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a talented ping pong player striving for success in the 1950s. A24 spared no expense on Marty Supreme, assembling a remarkable cast including Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow, former SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher, and Shark Tank‘s Kevin O’Leary (Mr. Wonderful). The film reportedly has a budget of $60 to $70 million – the largest in A24’s history.
Critics are loving Marty Supreme, giving it a 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 90 reviews. It’s already appeared on several “best of 2025” lists and has received Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor – Musical or Comedy, and Best Screenplay. Many predict it will be a strong contender at the Academy Awards. Marty Supreme is both critically acclaimed and enjoyable for general audiences, and it’s exactly the kind of innovative film that A24 is known for.

‘Sorry, Baby’

A24
Eva Victor not only stars in, but also wrote and directed her first feature film, Sorry, Baby. The film captures the essence of what makes A24 productions so successful. While Marty Supreme benefited from established credentials and a sizable budget, Sorry, Baby was a completely unexpected hit. Made for just $3 million, it premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and quickly became one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the event. Sorry, Baby tells the story of a withdrawn college professor, played by Victor, who is grappling with depression after experiencing a sexual assault during graduate school. Despite its serious themes, the film handles the subject matter with both the respect it deserves and a subtle, dry humor that reflects the character’s way of dealing with trauma.
As a movie lover, I have to say, Sorry, Baby completely blew me away. It’s an incredible debut for the director, striking a perfect balance between funny and heartbreaking. You’ll definitely laugh, but the humor actually masks a really powerful and honest story about dealing with trauma and learning to heal – and it beautifully shows that even acceptance doesn’t magically erase the pain. Trust me, when you find out what the title means, it hits hard. It’s fantastic to see Eva Victor getting Golden Globe recognition for her performance – she absolutely deserves it. Honestly, I think Sorry, Baby isn’t just A24’s best film of 2025, but one of the very best films of the entire year.
