Berlinale Series Market: Fernando Meirelles, Alex de la Iglesia, ‘Borgen’s’ Maja Jul Larsen to Unveil New Shows

The Berlinale Series Market has unveiled its selection of shows. This specialized market for global television content will feature Spanish series at the Berlinale Market Selects screenings, including “Internal Affairs,” a drama about one of Spain’s first female police officers starting her first assignment, and “Honor,” an adaptation of the popular Israeli show in which a judge attempts to conceal his son’s criminal actions.

In a post-climate catastrophe world, the television series “Sanctuary,” produced by Alex de la Iglesia, AtresmediaTV, and Alex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang at their Banijay-supported studio Pookepsie Films, offers a future where women are confined to protective domes during pregnancy due to pollution. However, things aren’t as simple as they seem.

Developed by Alex de la Iglesia, AtresmediaTV, and Alex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang at their Banijay-supported Pookepsie Films, the series “Sanctuary” envisions a future where women must live in protective domes during pregnancy to safeguard them from pollution caused by climate change. But there’s more to it than they realize.

At the same time, “City of God” director Fernando Meirelles and “Borgen” scriptwriter Maja Jul Larsen plan to present their works in the Co-Production Series section at BSM.

Spain has been chosen as the Country in Focus at this year’s EFM.

Among the highlighted nations, I find myself captivated by a diverse array: Australia-U.S., Brazil, Estonia and Ukraine, France, Greece, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Portugal and Poland, South Africa, South Korea, and New Zealand. Each one holds its unique charm that I can’t help but admire.

In “Broken Spies,” the story revolves around captivating casinos, hotels, and clandestine hideouts inhabited by cunning female spies, all working tirelessly to alter the course of war. On the other hand, “Crows” presents a chilling tale where a series of murders stirs up the peace in a community, leaving it to an inexperienced investigator to unveil the hidden truth. Lastly, the main character in “My Dear Mother” is forced to confront difficult realities when her mother’s lifeless body is discovered on the beach.

In the first person perspective as a fan:

“Exploring ‘Concrete Market’ transports me into a post-apocalyptic reality after a devastating earthquake, where only one structure remains upright. On the other hand, stepping back to the 80s with ‘Brazil’s Oxygen Masks Will (Not) Drop Automatically’, I find myself immersed in a heart-wrenching tale of a team of flight attendants hatching a plan to secretly distribute AZT in an effort to combat HIV and AIDS.

In the story “A Night to Live,” two outcasts stand on the brink of jumping off a Parisian building. However, their unexpected meeting leads them to postpone their jump, at least for one night. The main character in “Reincarnate” is considering suicide on the day he’s released from prison, where he served 18 years for murdering his partner, Caio. But an encounter with someone who claims to be Caio’s reborn spirit changes everything. Lastly, “Suture” is a tale set in Brazil, focusing on a medical student and a surgeon compelled to work for a criminal organization.

Or:

In the novel “A Night to Live,” two social outcasts are about to leap from a building in Paris. Following their unexpected meeting, they decide to stay alive, at least for one more night. The protagonist of “Reincarnate” is contemplating suicide on the day he’s released from prison, where he spent 18 years for murdering his partner, Caio. However, an encounter with someone who claims to be Caio reborn turns his life around. In the Brazilian story “Suture,” a medical student and a surgeon are forced to work for a criminal organization against their will.

In “Sunny Nights,” a pair of siblings set sail to Sydney to launch a spray tan enterprise, illuminating their journey. However, their adventure takes a grim turn when they encounter the city’s criminal underbelly. Contrastingly, in “The Morning After,” young individuals navigate relationships and anxieties about the future, carving out their unique paths. In “n00b” from New Zealand, a well-liked boy finds himself exposed, leading him to unite with other outcasts and immerse himself in an unfamiliar digital world.

This year, the Berlinale Series Market is highlighting intricate depictions of women and prioritizing narratives that mirror the richness of human life’s variances, as mentioned by Tanja Meissner, a director from Berlinale Pro.

Among intriguing female lead characters, the Icelandic drama “Vigdís” follows the journey of the world’s first woman to be elected president. In Norway’s “Heajastallan – A Sámi Wedding,” a woman is portrayed whose social status might significantly transform with her son’s upcoming nuptials, and “Maria: The Unknown Callas” delves into the life of the girl before she rose to fame as a legendary diva and one of the greatest opera singers in history.

Among engaging female lead characters, the Icelandic drama “Vigdís” follows the journey of the first woman globally to be chosen as president. In Norway’s “Heajastallan – A Sámi Wedding,” we meet a woman whose son’s upcoming nuptials might significantly impact her social status. Lastly, “Maria: The Unknown Callas” introduces the girl who became renowned as a legendary diva and one of history’s greatest opera singers.

In the 11th installment of the Co-Pro Series, ten extra projects will be featured, beginning with “The Best of Families,” produced by Apple Tree Productions. This Danish drama, created by Maja Jul Larsen (of “Borgen” fame) and directed by Charlotte Sieling, delves into the effects of a chemical factory on diverse families and the environment during the 1950s. “Miami Wildlife,” a collaboration between Brazil and the USA, will be helmed by Fernando Meirelles, and it centers around an unconventional drug lord. Similarly, “Shit Happens,” an Austrian production based on real events, tells the story of a single mother who rises to power in a significant hashish ring.

In “Die Experten,” Emmy-winning author Julian Pörksen brings Merle Kröger’s novel to life, focusing on German rocket scientists in Egypt during the 60s, espionage, and the complex political climate of the region. The Swiss series “The Guard” delves into crime within the Vatican, while “Our People,” a collaboration between Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Germany, will add to Berlin’s lineup after winning at Series Mania. “Ruth’s Ghosts” is an upcoming dystopian tale exploring abortion, self-determination, and legal jurisdiction in the United States. For literature enthusiasts, the upcoming release “Lucy. Maud.” promises a deep dive into the life story of L.M. Montgomery, the creator of the beloved classic “Anne of Green Gables.

In “Recipes of a Nervous Breakdown,” well-known figures are featured, narrating the true account of celebrated chef and author Sophie White as she navigates through a sudden mental collapse. Meanwhile, “Sk8 or Die” is a production written and directed by award-winning creators Tom Hern and Halaifonua Finau, focusing on the life of barefoot skateboarder Lee Ralph.

Additionally, the upcoming showcase titled “Up Next: Germany” is set to reveal exciting local series for the coming year. These include “Parallel Me,” a captivating tale about a young woman’s magical journey through various alternatives of her own life, “Euphorie,” inspired by the original format “Euphoria” from the Israeli cable channel HOT, “All In,” which chronicles the story of a young Muslim woman’s quest to become an astronaut, and “The Nazi Cartel,” a joint documentary investigation into the establishment of the first narco-state in Bolivia in 1980.

At long last, I’m excited to share that during the upcoming festival, my heart will swell with pride as “Underage” – the brilliantly crafted Brazilian film – graces the screens in the Generation section at Berlinale. Additionally, another masterpiece, “Other People’s Money,” hailing from Germany, Austria, and Denmark, has been selected for the Panorama segment. Last but not least, I eagerly anticipate the screening of “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” a captivating collaboration between Australia and the USA, as part of the Berlinale Special. Can’t wait to immerse myself in these exceptional cinematic journeys!
