At the 27th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, taking place from March 6th to 16th, French filmmaker Nicolas Philibert will receive the honorary Golden Alexander for his significant contributions to cinema. Additionally, this festival will feature a tribute honoring the work of American filmmaker Lauren Greenfield.
Philbert, who “bravely explores the deepest recesses of the human mind,” is set to conduct a workshop, overseen by filmmaker, producer, and scriptwriter Marco Gastine.
In the year 2023, Philibert was awarded Berlin’s Golden Bear for the best film, titled “On the Adamant”. Meanwhile, “Être et Avoir” received the European Film Award for Best Documentary back in 2002.
During the festival, we will showcase a series of three films by Philibert focused on innovative psychiatric methods, as well as an enlightening documentary about individuals serving as nurse practitioners. These films include: “Each and Every Moment” (2018), “On the Adamant” (2023), “At Averroès & Rosa Parks” (2024) and “The Typewriter and Other Headaches”(2024).

Greenfield, a member of the International Competition jury, criticizes the harmful aspects of excessive consumerism, offering sharp insights into the decline of the newly wealthy class who squander their riches on fleeting pleasures, according to the festival’s statement.
Lauren Greenfield started her documentary career with the debut film “Thin” (released in 2006), which was recognized with a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. In the year 2012, she received the Sundance Directing Award for Documentary with “The Queen of Versailles.” Her other works include “Kids + Money” (released in 2008), “Fashion Show” (released in 2010), “Beauty CULTure” (released in 2011), and “Generation Wealth” (released in 2018).
The latest production she’s working on, titled “Social Studies” (2024), is an intriguing social study examining the impact of social media on the current generation of young people who grew up with digital technology.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “The Last Republican,” directed by Steve Pink, will be gracing our screens at the festival. This compelling documentary sheds light on the courageous journey of popular former Republican politician Adam Kinzinger as he pursues justice for Donald Trump in the wake of the January 2021 Capitol attack.
