On a chilly winter’s eve, I found myself captivated by Tilda Swinton’s fiery performance as the 75th Berlin Film Festival kicked off with a glamorous gala event. The night was particularly memorable as this extraordinary Scottish actress, famed for her adaptability and daring roles, received a well-deserved career achievement honor.

According to a report by Ellise Shafer for EbMaster in Berlin, Swinton directly criticized the rising wave of far-right administrations that intend to transform the United States and Europe over the next few years.
Cruelty is occurring under our very eyes, and I have no qualms in pointing this out. I stand with those who see the unjustified tolerance of self-serving governments, who align themselves with environmental destroyers and war perpetrators, regardless of their origin. This was expressed by Swinton at an event held at Berlinale Palast, located about a mile from the Brandenburg Gate.
This year’s festival takes place against a backdrop of political upheaval in Germany, as the nation prepares for significant general elections on February 23rd. Remarkably, these elections fall on the last day of the sprocket opera that started on February 13th. The elections have been notable due to the increase in support for the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD), whose positions on immigration and other matters have sparked much debate.
Ramin Setoodeh and Elsa Keslassy captured a broader perspective of the event, revealing insights about the esteemed and cherished festival currently experiencing transformation during its inaugural year under the leadership of Tricia Tuttle.
Located between Sundance and the final stretch of awards season, coinciding with this year’s BAFTAs in London (on Sunday), Berlin has faced challenges in recent times compared to the glamour and excitement of Cannes or Venice. However, Tuttle is working hard to attract more prominent films and celebrities to Berlin.”
