The Grinch is currently very popular on Netflix. This animated movie, released in 2018 and featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the Grinch, is the third version of Dr. Seuss’s classic 1957 children’s book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! It follows the original 1966 animated TV special and the 2000 live-action film that starred Jim Carrey.
As of today, December 22nd, the 2018 version of The Grinch is the second most popular movie on Netflix worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. It’s currently behind The Great Flood at number one and ahead of Jim Carrey’s 2000 film, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which is in fifth place. Rounding out the top ten, My Secret Santa is currently number seven.
Rounding out the top ten are Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Murder in Monaco, The Croods: A New Age, the Jake Paul versus Anthony Joshua boxing match, Dave Chappelle: The Unstoppable comedy special, and A Time For Bravery at number ten.
This week, the movie The Grinch (2018) is a top 10 hit on Netflix in an impressive 78 countries around the world, including those in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Although it’s not currently on Netflix in the U.S., you can still watch The Grinch on Peacock.
Directed by Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney (known for The Lorax), The Grinch stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the famously grumpy, green Grinch. This recluse despises Christmas and attempts to spoil the holiday for the cheerful town of Whoville by stealing their decorations and presents, aided by his dog, Max.
Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, the film features Cameron Seely, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Angela Lansbury, and Pharrell Williams as the narrator. Tristan O’Hare, Sam Lavagnino, Ramone Hamilton, Scarlett Estevez, Michael Beattie, and Bill Farmer also contribute their voices to the cast.
When The Grinch (2018) came out, reviews were mixed. It earned a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics saying it updated the classic Dr. Seuss story with bright, colorful animation and was a fun, simple retelling for kids. However, they also felt it didn’t add much new to the original story.
While audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are mixed (54%), The Grinch was a huge financial success, earning $540 million worldwide. This makes it the highest-grossing Christmas movie and the most successful film ever based on the works of Dr. Seuss.
As a big fan of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, I’m happy to see so many versions available! You can stream the classic 1966 animated special, as well as the 2018 version of The Grinch on Peacock. And if you’re like me and love Jim Carrey’s live-action take from 2000, that’s on both Peacock and Prime Video!
