The upcoming thriller, Wife and Dog, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, has been given a release date, and details about the plot are starting to emerge. The film boasts a strong cast, including Rosamund Pike, Anthony Hopkins, Cosmo Jarvis, Paddy Considine, and James Norton.
The new film, Wife and Dog, will hit theaters on October 23rd. Directed and written by Ritchie, the movie follows a ruthless fight for power within the wealthy and corrupt Fairbank family, filled with backstabbing and ultimately, murder.
Black Bear Pictures will release the film, along with two other movies this year. Dustin Hoffman’s Tuner will be in U.S. theaters on May 22nd, and Matthew McConaughey’s The Rivals of Amziah King will follow on August 22nd. Black Bear Pictures began distributing films in the U.S. in July 2025 and plans to release about 12 films in theaters annually.
News about the release date and plot of Wife and Dog arrived alongside the confirmation that season 2 of MobLand will debut in 2026. Ritchie directs and executive produces the hit crime thriller, which features Considine and focuses on the conflict between powerful families.
The film Wife and Dog brings to mind the hit show Succession, imagining what the characters might do—even resort to murder—to gain control of Logan Roy’s media empire. Ritchie’s movie shares similar themes and could benefit from the popularity of the HBO series.
Ritchie is also directing several episodes of Young Sherlock, a new Prime Video series launching on March 4, 2026. The show features Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, alongside Dónal Finn as James Moriarty, Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an, Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge, Joseph Fiennes as Silas Holmes, and Max Irons as Mycroft Holmes.
Although Benedict Cumberbatch has been in numerous films and TV shows, Wife and Dog marks his first time working with director Guy Ritchie. Interestingly, both have a history with the Sherlock Holmes stories. Cumberbatch famously played Sherlock in the BBC series Sherlock, and Ritchie previously directed the Robert Downey Jr. films Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows before creating the Prime Video prequel.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Anthony Hopkins, who both appear in Marvel movies as Doctor Strange and Odin, have actually worked together before. They were both in Thor: Ragnarok, but their characters never interacted on screen.
