Nearly 20 years after it first came out, Ben Stiller’s comedy Night at the Museum is now a top 10 hit on Netflix.
Night at the Museum, a 2006 film directed by Shawn Levy, is inspired by the 1993 children’s book of the same name by Milan Trenc. The movie stars Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, a dad who’s down on his luck and takes a job as a night watchman at the American Museum of Natural History. He soon finds out the museum’s exhibits come to life at night because of an ancient, cursed object from Egypt.
Nearly two decades after it first came out in theaters, Night at the Museum has climbed into the top 10 most-watched movies on Netflix. It’s currently at number 8 in both the U.S. and Malaysia. Other popular titles on the chart include The Investigation of Lucy Letby at number 1 (in the U.S., Canada, and other countries), The Rip at number 2, and K-Pop Demon Hunters at number 3.
In Night at the Museum, Ben Stiller acted alongside Robin Williams, who played a remarkably lively version of Theodore Roosevelt brought to life from his museum exhibit – his performance was a highlight of the movie. The film also featured Owen Wilson, Rami Malek, Steve Coogan, Patrick Gallagher, and Mizou Peck as museum displays or employees who came to life at night. Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, and Bill Cobbs also appeared in the film.
Although Night at the Museum is popular on streaming services now, it didn’t receive great reviews when it first came out. Critics give it a score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, appreciating the film’s idea and special effects but finding the way it was made and the humor lacking. Luckily, viewers seem to enjoy it more, giving it a 67% audience score.
The Night at the Museum movies have always been popular around the world. Films like Battle of the Smithsonian and Secret of the Tomb helped build a large international audience. The franchise continued to grow in 2022 with the animated film Kahmunrah Rises Again, introducing the magic of the museum to a new generation of viewers.
The Night at the Museum movies were a huge hit with audiences, bringing in over $1.3 billion globally. Though critics weren’t always impressed, the films consistently attracted families with their fun stories and memorable characters.
It’s no surprise Night at the Museum is popular again! Netflix added all three movies on February 1st, introducing them to new audiences and letting existing fans easily re-watch the fun adventures.
The recent surge in popularity of the 2006 film is probably due to a combination of fond memories and Netflix’s recommendations. Movies like Night at the Museum are perfect for families and anyone looking for light, enjoyable entertainment that appeals to viewers worldwide.
The Night at the Museumtrilogy is available to stream on Netflix.
