Since it first aired in 2016, Home Town has been a popular show on HGTV. Hosts Ben and Erin Napier are known for their passion for historic preservation, and they renovate homes and businesses in their hometown of Laurel, Mississippi. The show’s success has led to several spin-offs, and another is planned, but I was surprised to learn the reason why Ben and Erin won’t be hosting it.
What Home Town Spinoff Is On The Way And Why Will The Napiers Not Host It?
Ben and Erin Napier, the stars of HGTV’s Home Town, are constantly working on renovations throughout the year. This dedication allows them to create content not only for Home Town but also for other shows in the Home Town franchise, including Home Town Takeover, where they revitalize a different small town each season.
Recently, TopMob’s Nick Venable spoke with Ben and Erin Napier before the tenth season of their show is scheduled to air in 2026. He discussed their previous series, Takeover (which premiered in 2025 with its third season), and revealed that the upcoming season will be a first for the couple – it will take place in Canada! They haven’t decided on a specific city yet, but they also explained that, unlike their Home Town projects, they won’t be able to personally host this season.
- Erin: Our production company is Canadian. The people who make our show, they’re passionate about this Canadian takeover. But, because we are Americans, we are not legally allowed to host the show. We can only be in it as, like, guest stars.
- Ben: Yeah, a Canadian broadcast show has to be hosted by Canadian talent. 90%; I think 90 was the number. I thought it was just a majority.
Wait, really? Canada actually has a law requiring shows to primarily feature Canadian hosts and creators? I looked into it, and it seems this comes from the Online Streaming Act, passed in 2023, which aims to promote Canadian content. While I couldn’t find a specific rule stating 90% of shows must be hosted by Canadians, I trust what Ben has said about it.
Although this change might seem surprising, it doesn’t mean Ben and Erin won’t be part of the show at all. Fans are already accustomed to seeing them collaborate with other HGTV stars, as each past season of Takeover has featured guest appearances from popular renovation experts.
Erin expressed her enthusiasm for visiting Canada, saying she’s never been and imagines it would be especially wonderful in the summer. However, Ben pointed out that the hosts for the trip have already been selected.
We know who it is, and I can say that we really like them. It’s another husband and wife team.
I have to say, when Ben and Erin genuinely connect with the people they’re working for, it’s such a great sign! I always feel like if they approve, then I will too. It just means good things are coming, and it always makes me so happy to see them enjoying the process.
