Ben Affleck is a hugely successful actor, known for both big-budget action films and award-winning performances. But before becoming a star, he started with small, uncredited roles in movies like Field of Dreams and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Interestingly, one of those early roles nearly cost him another, more significant opportunity.
Apparently Ben Affleck Increased The F-Bomb ON Dazed And Confused
Ben Affleck makes a brief but noticeable appearance in Richard Linklater’s film Dazed and Confused. Interestingly, much of the character’s colorful language was reportedly added by Affleck himself.
According to Kevin Smith, when he was casting for Mallrats, producer James Jacks (who’d previously worked on Dazed and Confused) was unhappy to learn that Ben Affleck was auditioning. Smith recalls asking Jacks why, and Jacks explained…
He’s known for using a lot of profanity. We worked with him on the movie Dazed and Confused, which only had a small amount of swearing. But when Ben Affleck joined the project, he started using the swear word ‘fuck’ constantly – in almost every scene.
Some argue that Ben Affleck’s tendency to swear would have actually been a good thing for the movie, considering Kevin Smith often uses a lot of strong language. However, the director, Jacks, thought Mallrats already had plenty of cursing and decided against casting Affleck.
The Mallrats Filming Experience Was Quite Different
The producer’s first choice for the role of Shannon Hamilton – the manager of a fancy men’s clothing store and a love interest caught between Jason Lee and Shannon Doherty – was clearly Ben Affleck.
Ben Affleck’s characters in both Dazed and Confused and Mallrats were bullies, but Kevin Smith recalls that working with Affleck himself was actually a very positive experience. He explained…
I first really got to know and appreciate Ben Affleck while working with him on the set of Mallrats in Minnesota. He’s incredibly funny, intelligent, and charismatic. It was surprising to see someone with so much charm playing the role of a bully, even in my own films.
Even though Ben Affleck had already achieved success with Good Will Hunting, landing a role in Mallrats was a turning point for him. It sparked a friendship with Kevin Smith that has remained significant for both of them, even through some difficult times.
Kevin Smith has often talked about making a sequel to Mallrats, and while it hasn’t happened yet, he’s recently revisited many of his older films with new sequels. Given this trend, a Mallrats sequel seems increasingly possible. Plus, Ben Affleck has made appearances in several of Smith’s recent projects, so if a sequel does come to fruition, we’ll probably see the two collaborating again.
