As a lifelong anime enthusiast, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Sony Pictures partnering with Studio CHIZU and Nippon TV to co-produce and co-finance “Scarlet,” the new animated feature from the brilliant Mamoru Hosoda. Hosoda’s journey in animation is nothing short of inspiring, having started at Toei Animation back in 1991 and gaining widespread recognition with “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” in 2006.
Sony Pictures, in collaboration with Studio CHIZU and Nippon TV, will jointly produce and fund the production of “Scarlet,” an upcoming animated film by the Academy Award-nominated Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda.
The movie is set for worldwide distribution by Sony Pictures, with a scheduled U.S. theater release in winter 2025. For Japan, Toho is responsible for managing the theatrical distribution.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to be part of the unique collaboration between Sony Pictures and Studio CHIZU, an animation studio founded by visionary director Hosoda and producer Yuichiro Saito back in 2011. This project sees Saito joining forces with Toshimi Tanio from Nippon TV and Nozomu Takahashi from within the ranks of Studio CHIZU, making this an exciting endeavor for all involved.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I find myself drawn to the captivating tale of “Scarlet,” a story that delves into a princess defying the boundaries of time and dimension. This intriguing narrative shares similarities with Hosoda’s recent masterpiece, “Belle” (2021), which graced the Cannes Film Festival and holds the distinction of being his most financially successful film thus far.
Hosoda’s animation career took off in 1991 at Toei Animation. He became well-known after directing “Digimon Adventure” (1999) and its follow-up “Digimon Adventure: Our War Game!” (2000). However, it was his movie “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” (2006), which won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Animation, that truly brought him into the limelight. This film paved the way for a series of successful productions such as “Summer Wars” (2009), which garnered him an Annie Award nomination for Best Director and was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been captivated by the extraordinary works of Studio CHIZU, particularly those directed by Hosoda. From “Wolf Children” (2012) to “The Boy and the Beast” (2015), and most recently, “Mirai” (2018), Hosoda’s creative journey has not only mesmerized me but also been recognized on a global scale. Notably, “Mirai” earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film, a testament to its exceptional storytelling and artistic merit.
As a dedicated advocate, I’ve been part of Studio CHIZU since its establishment in April 2011. Our primary focus is on the development and production of captivating animated films, with a visionary mission that drives us to delve into uncharted realms of animation creativity.
