Before becoming known for her role as Ellie in The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey appeared in HBO’s most popular fantasy series – though it wasn’t Game of Thrones. The Last of Us premiered in 2023 and was highly praised by critics for its adaptation of the popular video game. Ramsey will continue to play Ellie in seasons 2 and 3.
I was so excited to see Bella Ramsey in this new show, but I realized it wasn’t their first time with HBO! They were actually in Game of Thrones as Lyanna Mormont. I remember when Lyanna first showed up in season 6 – she was this really young, but incredibly powerful leader of House Mormont. Honestly, she was only meant to be in one episode, but everyone loved them so much that the show’s creators kept bringing them back! They ended up being a recurring character throughout seasons 6, 7, and 8, which was awesome. It’s cool to see them leading another HBO fantasy series now!
Bella Ramsey Is In His Dark Materials Season 2
In season two of HBO’s fantasy series, His Dark Materials, based on Philip Pullman’s novels, Simone Ramsey plays the character Angelica. All episodes of the season were released in 2020, following the conclusion of Game of Thrones and before the debut of The Last of Us. Angelica resides in Cittàgazze, a city that Lyra Belacqua (played by Dafne Keen) and Will Parry (played by Amir Wilson) discover early in the season.
As a film buff, I always find the world-building in stories fascinating, and Cittàgazze is no exception. It’s a city where these creepy creatures called Spectres have snatched away all the adults’ souls, leaving the kids to basically run wild. Angelica fills Lyra and Will in on some of the city’s history, what life was like before they showed up, but she’s definitely holding back. It creates this really tense dynamic because later, she actually blames them for something awful that happens – it’s a clever way to build conflict and keep you guessing about her motives.
His Dark Materials Has A Better Ending Than Game Of Thrones
Many expected Game of Thrones to be HBO’s greatest fantasy series, but the final season disappointed fans with its uneven storytelling and unsatisfying character arcs. In contrast, His Dark Materials is known for having one of the best endings in fantasy television. The show’s third season maintains the high quality of previous seasons and effectively brings the source material’s grand and emotional finale to life.
What truly sets HBO’s His Dark Materials apart as a top fantasy series is its consistently high quality throughout. It benefited from having a finished source material – Philip Pullman’s book trilogy was already complete – which gave it an edge over Game of Thrones, as George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is still ongoing.
