‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ Documentary Sets 2025 Release Date

As a fan who had the privilege of witnessing Led Zeppelin’s electrifying performance at the Texas International Pop Festival in 1969, I can hardly contain my excitement for “Becoming Led Zeppelin.” This documentary promises to take us back to the formative years of one of the most iconic rock bands ever, offering an immersive experience that will make audiences feel like they’re right there with the band in those historic concert halls.

In 2025, the story of how Led Zeppelin rose to fame as a legendary English rock band will be shown on movie screens in a documentary titled “The Rise of Led Zeppelin.

Sony Picture Classics, having obtained the film earlier this year, intends to debut “Becoming Led Zeppelin” exclusively at Imax cinemas starting February 7. Prior to the official release in approximately 200 theaters, Imax will host preliminary screenings in 18 different locations on February 5.

Bernard MacMahon, the film’s director, stated that the Imax cinema effect combined with the movie’s genuine soundtrack offers viewers an engaging and realistic experience, making it seem as if they are actually present at the venues, alongside the band.

The film titled ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ offers an unprecedented look into the early days of this private band, featuring Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. This hybrid docu-concert movie combines never-before-seen footage with commentary from the band members themselves. It also includes rare, unseen performances from Led Zeppelin’s first tours. As the title implies, ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ primarily focuses on the band’s formation in the 1960s, rather than their entire career. This documentary is unique because it’s told in the band’s own words and is the first officially approved film about them.

For five years, Allison McGourty, as both writer and producer, crisscrossed the Atlantic Ocean, delving into various attics and basements in search of elusive, previously unseen film footage, photos, and audio recordings. Once discovered, each item was carefully transferred using specialized methods, ensuring that the 55-year-old videos and music played and looked as if they had just been freshly processed in a lab.

A preview of the work-in-progress film titled “Becoming Led Zeppelin” was shown at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. In his review for EbMaster, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman commended the exceptional footage presented in the documentary but expressed that it might be too biased towards the band’s point of view. “Becoming Led Zeppelin” is rich with essential content, he wrote, yet on another level, it comes across as a promotional video for Led Zeppelin.

Tom Bernard, who is the joint president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics, thinks that “Becoming Led Zeppelin” will serve as an inspiration for future generations and could leave a lasting impact on those yet to come.

Bernard shared that witnessing Led Zeppelin live for the first time in August 1969 at the Texas International Pop Festival in Grapevine, Texas left an indelible impression on him. He can’t recall any film that better immerses you into an artist’s journey, reveals their creative process, and makes you feel like you’re experiencing their music for the first time.
