Director Coyote Peterson, renowned for his Emmy-winning work on the “Brave Wilderness” YouTube channel, has gathered a team of skilled wildlife specialists to recount, in a detailed analysis, the harrowing bear encounter that four college wrestlers, Kendell Cummings, Brady Lowry, Orrin Jackson and August Harrison, narrowly survived in Cody, Wyoming, in October 2022.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Bear Grylls, an acclaimed BAFTA and Emmy winner from The Natural Studios (known for shows like “Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” “Man Vs. Wild,” and “You Vs. Wild”), and Casey Anderson of Vision Hawk Films (“Expedition Wild,” “America the Wild”) are lending their expertise in wilderness survival for our upcoming film. Interestingly, Peterson and Anderson will not only be part of the production team but also share the screen with me as co-hosts. The Natural Studios is gearing up to present this exhilarating project to potential buyers.
At present, “That Bear Kid” is undergoing post-production and is set to be submitted to film festivals in early 2025. This production is a joint effort between Peterson’s Brave Wilderness and Brevity Films, directed by Roland Kassis and Alyssa Schroeter. Furthermore, Ita Kennedy, known for “The Amazing Race,” and Beau Sedivy, associated with “Brave Wilderness,” are the producers of this documentary.
Over time, various media representations have often depicted bears as villains. However, “That Bear Kid” offers an insightful perspective, delving into the intricate nature of human-animal conflicts, a complexity that becomes even more pronounced as the attendance in national parks increases.
According to Peterson, nature can become harsh when its boundaries are crossed, and it can be lethal if taken beyond those limits. The objective of ‘That Bear Kid’, as he puts it, is to correct misconceptions about such animals and bolster conservation initiatives for creatures frequently misjudged in our society.
Kassis and Schroeter noted that when Coyote Peterson expressed his desire to tell a story and guide it, partnering with Brave Wilderness and Bear Grylls was an obvious choice. They were impressed not only by the bravery and self-awareness of these young men but also by the significant conservation efforts made by Brave Wilderness in making wildlife content engaging for global audiences. They look forward to seeing how they will apply similar values to ‘That Bear Kid’.
In his role as the project’s executive, renowned survival expert Bear Grylls commented, “This film not just mirrors the gritty, indomitable essence of human resilience, but also portrays the delicate ballet between humans and wildlife. Our aim is to redefine perceptions, underscore the dignity of these animals, and fuel discussions on conservation and living harmoniously with nature. I must say, Coyote, Casey, and their team have truly excelled themselves, and I’m confident that this film will resonate deeply with everyone who watches it.
As a movie critic, I should note that the esteemed Executive Producers on this production come from several acclaimed studios. Kassis and Schroeter of Brevity Films, Beau Sedivy and Ita Kennedy at Peterson’s Brave Wilderness, Grylls and Delbert Shoopman with The Natural Studios, and Anderson from Vision Hawk Films all lend their expertise to this project.
