David Goldfarb, a game industry veteran and founder of The Outsiders, has announced the studio is closing, but he and his team plan to continue working on future projects.
Goldfarb announced that The Outsider studio is closing down due to cuts at its parent company, Funcom. The studio, founded in 2015, nearly closed in 2020 when their game, Darkborn, was cancelled. Following that cancellation, Funcom gained majority ownership of The Outsider. The studio went on to release the rhythm-action game Metal: Hellsinger in 2022.
I’ll always cherish this experience, and I’m incredibly thankful we were able to create it with such a fantastic team and through strong partnerships,” Goldfarb stated.
Goldfarb mentioned The Outsiders had ideas for an even more impressive project down the line, but acknowledged that plans don’t always work out as expected.
Despite the challenges, Goldfarb stated they aren’t giving up and plan to move forward in a new way. He acknowledged that change is difficult and everyone is currently feeling the impact of the situation.
I was really surprised to hear that Funcom, the team behind The Outsiders (they had about 60 people in their Stockholm office), is letting people go. Even though they just had a massive launch with Dune: Awakening – apparently it’s their biggest release in 32 years! – they still had to make some tough cuts and reduce their workforce. It’s a bit disheartening to hear, honestly.
David Goldfarb is best known for his contributions to the Battlefield series during his time at DICE. He later moved to Overkill Software, where he directed the popular game Payday 2, before founding his own studio, The Outsiders, in 2015.
