Battlefield Redsec launches with ‘Mostly Negative’ reviews on Steam

Battlefield Redsec, the free-to-play game that includes the battle royale mode from Battlefield 6, has launched to largely negative reviews on Steam.

Just 35 days after the successful launch of Battlefield 6—a game that marked a return to popularity for the series—EA released Battlefield Redsec to maintain the game’s momentum.

On October 28, 2025, Redsec launched its long-awaited battle royale mode. Players can expect intense combat, plenty of vehicle-based destruction, and a shrinking safe zone filled with deadly fire that eliminates those caught outside of it.

Although it’s certainly early days yet, the surprise release hasn’t gone down well with everyone. Out of the gate, the standalone F2P title currently sits with a ‘Mostly Negative’ rating on Steam for a few key reasons.

Why is Battlefield Redsec rated ‘Mostly Negative’ on Steam?

As of today, BF Redsec has received 5,219 reviews on Steam from players worldwide, with over 3,000 of those being negative. This contrasts sharply with Battlefield 6, which has garnered over 78,000 ‘Mostly Positive’ reviews in the past month.

Redsec received initial feedback from a limited number of users, and since the product is so new – it’s only been available for a day – it’s best to view these early reviews with some caution.

The main complaints center around two issues: players want a dedicated playlist for playing alone, and some in-game Challenges are currently only available in the new Battle Royale mode.

When Redsec launched, it only offered team modes – either in groups of four (Quads) or two (Duos). You can’t currently play as a single player and battle others doing the same. No matter which team size you choose, the game will fill your team with other players. While a mode for solo players is planned, many are already frustrated by the lack of it at launch.

One player complained that it’s frustrating to play with people you don’t know when facing teams that are already organized and playing together.

“I wouldn’t have downloaded the game if I knew that beforehand,” another player chimed in.

A lot of the criticism centered around weekly Challenges being linked to Redsec. Basically, players who want to progress quickly each week are required to play the battle royale mode.

One player explained they purchased Battlefield 6 to enjoy its main game modes, but are frustrated they’re required to play Redsec to complete weekly challenges, even though they don’t enjoy that particular mode.

“This is not why I bought Battlefield 6,” another stressed.

Despite some worries that the game tries to do too much and might neglect its multiplayer features, the overall response has been positive. Many players enjoy the gameplay and suggest adding a solo mode as a helpful improvement.
