The “Wicked Grin” soldier skin for Battlefield 6 was removed from the game shortly after its release, with developers making the change without a public announcement.
When the first season of Battlefield 6 was released, players were hoping for realistic in-game items and character customizations, something the developers had repeatedly stated they would deliver. They specifically wanted to steer clear of the over-the-top, unrealistic skins often found in games like Call of Duty.
Players were promised a more realistic experience, a focus on what makes Battlefield unique, and a return to its historical military style. The first Battle Pass made some progress on these promises, offering new maps, a better way to unlock rewards, and more responsive weapons.
However, things started to change with the release of the Wicked Grin skin—a vibrant blue armor with a mask featuring a grinning skull.
Battlefield 6 reworks the Wicked Grin soldier skin after backlash
Reddit users reacted quickly, criticizing the developers for not delivering on their promise of realism. Many described the new skin as looking cheap or compared it to issues from the game Battlefield 2042.

A popular joke online pointed out that Battlefield’s attempt at more realistic character designs, or “grounded skins,” only lasted 18 days. Many players also complained that the vibrant colors made it difficult to distinguish between teammates and enemies, ruining the immersive experience of the game, which is intended to be a realistic military shooter.
Battlefield Studios quietly removed the ‘Wicked Grin’ cosmetic and gave the class a more realistic, military-style appearance. Although it was a paid item, the change reflects the studio’s commitment to regaining player trust.
Since its release, Battlefield 6 has been continually improved based on player feedback. Updates have focused on things like increasing experience points earned, adjusting weapon recoil, ensuring fair time-to-kill rates, and refining movement – all to create a more balanced combat experience.
Now that Redsec mode is available, players can experience a more realistic Battlefield 6, with less flashy appearances. However, choosing the right place to land and equipping the best gear are now even more crucial for success.
