The team behind the next Battlefield game says bringing back popular maps from older games is proving surprisingly challenging.
It’s common for game developers to revisit popular maps and update them for modern players. Call of Duty has a history of doing this, and they plan to continue the tradition with Black Ops 7.
The popular map Operation Firestorm, originally from Battlefield 3, will be reintroduced in the upcoming Battlefield 6, continuing a trend of bringing back fan-favorite locations.
As a long-time Battlefield fan, I’ve been following the development of the new game, and I’ve heard it’s been tougher than expected to revamp older maps. It’s not just a simple case of touching things up – apparently, giving a classic map a fresh look and changing how it plays is proving to be a real challenge for the developers!
Battlefield 6 devs on Operation Firestorm remaster
Shashank Uchil, a product owner and design director at DICE, recently discussed the return of Operation Firestorm, which fans have been anticipating for a long time.
It’s surprisingly challenging to meet player expectations. People are familiar with the map and have a clear idea of what they want, but they also tend to remember things more fondly than they actually were,” he explained to PCGamesN.
As a huge fan, I’m really curious about how they’re planning to make this map as destructible as all the others in the collection. It’s not just about that, though! They’ve also got to make sure all the weapons work perfectly with it, especially since they’re different from the ones in Battlefield 3. Honestly, from what I’ve heard, it’s way more complex than most people realize.

Jeremy Chubb, a producer at DICE, agreed with Uchil, explaining that players have strong feelings about that specific map and want to see it done right. He shared this with PCGamesN.
We wouldn’t let our players down too much if we couldn’t keep improving the game with new ideas and features.
Chubb added that Firestorm “still works” and is “still fun,” but expectations are still high.
While Battlefield Portal lets players try out different things, the next Battlefield game – Battlefield 6 – will be a completely fresh experience.
