Ra’s Al Ghul is typically portrayed as an enemy of Batman, but the Bat-Fam comic series presents him in a unique way. Instead of being a direct opponent, he’s depicted as part of the extended “Bat-Family,” and although he still has villainous tendencies, he generally respects the rules established by Batman and Alfred Pennyworth.
It’s clear that Ra’s al Ghul’s presence at Wayne Manor is partly explained by the fact that he’s a ghost, having died before the show began. While the series initially hints that Damian Wayne’s grandfather might be brought back to life – especially with a powerful artifact driving the plot and attracting Gotham’s villains – this ultimately doesn’t happen.
The story doesn’t hint at Ra’s Al Ghul being resurrected; instead, he seems perfectly happy existing as a ghost. He enjoys being with his grandson and has become a somewhat willing member of the larger Wayne family.
Ra’s Al Ghul’s Bat-Fam Story Is Able To Do So Much More Thanks To The Character’s Death
Ra’s Al Ghul’s continued presence in the Wayne family’s life creates an interesting dynamic in Bat-Fam. Though he’s not usually openly harmful, he hasn’t fully reformed like many other former Gotham villains. It appears he still wants Damian to embrace a villainous path and actively encourages him to do so.
Now that Ra’s al Ghul is a ghost, he doesn’t seem to be actively plotting or causing trouble, which is a shift from his usual behavior. Interestingly, recent stories show he can still affect the world around him, hinting that he might have simply prioritized spending time with his family over his old schemes, even if he doesn’t admit it.
The idea of a seemingly deceased Batman villain moving into Wayne Manor to be with his grandson and cause minor mischief is truly captivating. This storyline remains interesting throughout the Bat-Fam series, and it leaves the possibility open for a second season to explore this further if it’s approved.
