Barcelona fan misses Champions League game after going to wrong UK stadium

Tuesday night’s Champions League match between Barcelona and Newcastle United was exciting, ending in a draw. However, one fan missed all the action after accidentally going to the wrong stadium.

The Champions League has reached the knockout stage, meaning every error on the field is heavily penalized. This pressure extends beyond the game itself – any mistakes made off the field can be just as damaging.

A Barcelona supporter learned that lesson the hard way when a travel mix-up sent them more than 350 miles in the wrong direction – south instead of to St. James’ Park.

Supporter turns up at the wrong St. James’ Park for Barcelona game

A fan traveled all the way from Catalonia, Spain, hoping to see his team compete in a major European tournament. Unfortunately, he ended up attending a match in a lower division – League One – instead.

There’s a bit of confusion because both Newcastle United and Exeter City play their home games at a stadium named St. James’ Park. The Newcastle stadium is in northeastern England and holds about 52,000 spectators, while the Exeter one is located in Devon, in the southwest, and has a capacity of just under 9,000.

A Barcelona supporter only discovered his error when he arrived at Exeter City’s stadium, St. James’ Park, and presented his ticket to the puzzled staff.

Despite the mishap, the fan did get a free ticket to see Exeter play Lincoln City. Unfortunately, Exeter lost the game 1-0 to the leading team.

A Barcelona fan had an unexpected adventure last night after accidentally going to the wrong football stadium! The fan traveled from London to Devon intending to see a match, but ended up at Exeter City’s Adam Stansfield stand instead of the correct St. James’ Park.

Adam Spencer, who manages fan experience for the club, explained that a volunteer told them someone had arrived hoping to watch FC Barcelona play.

He didn’t speak English very well, but we understood he was from London. It seemed he’d looked up St James’ Park on his phone and simply followed the GPS to get here.

He was really upset and embarrassed, so we got him a ticket to see a game at the actual St James’ Park. We’d be happy to have him return whenever he likes.

Perhaps he’ll be buying a season ticket for The Grecians for 2026/27 now.

What did he miss in Champions League clash?

I was really bummed I couldn’t see the match at St. James’ Park – Barcelona and Newcastle played to a 1-1 tie, and I heard it was a great game!

Harvey Barnes put Newcastle ahead with only four minutes left in regular time. But a very late goal from young star Lamine Yamal tied the game, meaning the series is now evenly balanced heading into the second match in Barcelona.

Thanks for your support in Newcastle, culers 💙❤️

It’s unclear if Barcelona will contact the fan and offer some kind of gesture to apologize for him missing the game, but that would be a really thoughtful thing to do.
