Balatro Creator: “Maybe I Would’ve Been Happier” Not Releasing The Game

As a fan who has been captivated by the enchanting world of Balatro since its unexpected emergence earlier this year, I must say that I find the developer’s dilemma both heartwarming and relatable. It seems that success can sometimes be a double-edged sword, as even the most cherished hobbies can lose their charm when thrust into the limelight.

A Game of the Year contender and super successful, Balatro came out of nowhere this year from an anonymous developer called LocalThunk. It sounds like the perfect feel-good story, but the creator of the poker-inspired roguelike title has second guessed releasing it.

In an interview with GQ, LocalThunk looked back on the tumultuous year of 2024 since the debut of Balatro, questioning whether the sudden success of the card game had brought any regrets. “Admittedly, yes,” Balatro’s creator confessed. “I’m not saying this hasn’t transformed my life in countless wonderful ways; I couldn’t be more thankful. Yet, there are moments when I ponder over the past, reminiscing about the simpler times. Back then, it was just a fun pastime that helped me unwind. At times, I wonder if I might have been content without sharing this game with the world.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the talented mind behind LocalThunk acknowledges his good fortune. Financially speaking, he could easily step away from this creative journey today and still be financially secure. Yet, he chooses to continue, with exciting updates for Balatro on the horizon next year.

Regarding a potential new game following Balatro, LocalThunk mentioned that while he’s not actively considering it at the moment, creating such a game and keeping it private could provide a therapeutic outlet for him.

Among the ten outstanding games released by TopMob in 2024, Balatro stands out. Tonight, it is even nominated as Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
