Workers at a Michigan bakery were shocked when the intentionally ugly cake they created as an April Fool’s Day prank turned out to be surprisingly popular, with customers actually wanting to purchase it.
Homestead Kitchen shared a picture on Instagram on April 1st of their Easter cake, but it didn’t go over well. The cake was shaped like a lamb and looked disturbingly realistic – more like a poorly done taxidermy project than a sweet treat.
The bakery announced that today is the final day to order their special lamb cakes for Easter. Customers can choose from chocolate, vanilla, wedding almond, or lemon flavors.
Luckily, the scary-looking snack wasn’t real—it was made with AI as an April Fool’s Day joke. Surprisingly, people loved it and started asking if they could actually buy it!

Demand surges for bakery’s scuffed April Fool’s prank cake
Not everyone loved the initial image, however. Trina Staats of Homestead Bakery told SavorNation they received some negative feedback, which she quickly responded to by sharing a picture of their actual, traditional Easter lamb cake.
According to Staats, most people immediately recognized it as a joke, particularly their followers. They understand the dedication and high quality of work that goes into their cake designs.

Despite being a strange creation initially shared on Instagram, people loved it so much that many customers actually requested to purchase it.
We received a lot of orders and quickly sold out of the item. Several customers came in hoping to buy one, but were upset when we didn’t have any left. I never expected it to become so popular and we weren’t ready for such high demand.

To celebrate how popular it became, Staats posted a picture on Instagram of a real-life version of the scary lamb cake. She told SavorNation that the bakery even got orders from customers outside the country.
It all began as an April Fool’s prank, but it quickly became incredibly popular! The post got over 4 million views and sold out completely during the weekend, bringing lots of joy. She shared on Instagram how grateful they are for the amazing response, adding with a laugh, ‘You guys are wonderfully strange, and we love you for it!’
Staats announced the incredibly popular lamb cake will be back next year, and advises customers to start making plans now to ensure they don’t miss out.
